About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file for the West Fork Fish Creek Trail Bridge Replacement project (Solicitation Number 1240LU25R0011) in the Ninemile Ranger District of Lolo National Forest. The Q&A addresses three technical questions from potential contractors regarding the project, covering details about log specifications for a crib wall, steel component requirements, and transportation methods for project materials.
Key clarifications include: (1) naturally tapered Douglas Fir logs are acceptable for the crib wall, provided they meet industry standards, (2) structural steel girders must be type 3 weathering grade 50W, while other steel components can be A36 galvanized, and (3) stock/horses are permitted for transporting people and materials, as outlined in page 12 of the solicitation. The document is dated 6/20/2025 and provides precise technical guidance to potential bidders about specific construction requirements for the bridge replacement project.

Questions and Answers
As of 6/20/2025

1. The logs for the T.P.I graded Douglas Fir “DENSE—WALL LOG 30 GRADE” Crib Wall shown on sheet 6/13 are intended to be natural tapered logs, or will they require lathe turning to maintain a consistent 12”Ø from end to end?
ANSWER: The design accommodates naturally tapered logs, assuming they meet industry standards for maximum taper.
2. It appears, based on page 3 of the plans, that the structural steel (girders) will be of type 3 weathering grade 50w but that all other steel components can be A36 galvanized. I’m guessing the intent was not for this to occur, but rather have all steel shapes (girders, diaphragms, bearing shoes, plates, bars) be type 3 weathering grade 50. Can you confirm the design intentions of the USFS?
ANSWER: Per AASHTO, M 270 can apply to either Grade 50W or Grade 36. As a result, the girders shall be 50W while all other components (diaphragms, bearing shoes, plates, bars) can be A36.
3. In the Q&A it says no e bikes will be permitted only mountain bikes. We are wondering if horses or other livestock can be used for transporting people/materials?
ANSWER: Yes, stock is permitted. On page 12 of the solicitation it outlines the use of stock.
