SECTION 033000

CAST-IN-PLACE CONCRETE

PART 1 – GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. This Section includes cast-in-place concrete, including formwork, reinforcement, joints, concrete materials, mix design, placement procedures, and finishes.

1.2 SUBMITTALS

A. As specified in “Submittal Procedures” in Division 1 Section “General Requirements.”

1. Product Data:

a. Provide for each manufactured material and product including admixtures, patching compounds, joint systems, curing compounds, and sealants.

b. Submit certifications that admixtures used in the concrete mix are compat-ible with each other and the aggregates.

2. Certificates and Reports:

a. Concrete Mix Design: Comply with ASTM C 94; furnish statement of composition of concrete mix and evidence that mix will meet quality spec-ified herein, including cement content, fly ash content, entrained air con-tent, design slump and unit weight. Provide either 1) or 2) below for each mix proposed.

1) Compression test results for proposed mixes. Include standard devi-ation data for each proposed concrete mix based on statistical rec-ords where applicable.

2) Curve of water-cementitious materials ratio versus concrete cylinder strength for each formulation of concrete proposed based on labora-tory tests. The cylinder strength shall be the average of the 28 day cylinder strength test results for each mix. Provide results of 7 and 14 day tests if available.

b. Admixtures: Submit admixture types and manufacturers with a written statement showing chloride content if any chloride was added during manufacture.

c. Sources of cement, pozzolan, and aggregates.

d. Material Data Sheets (MSDS) for all concrete components and admix-tures.

e. Submit results of concrete slump, air content, and compressive strength tests.

f. Provide a written Hot and Cold Weather Concrete Placing Plan prior to start of any concrete operations.

3. Shop Drawings:

a. Submit detailed drawings for fabrication, bending and placement of con-crete reinforcement indicating size, dimension, bending, place and con-struction joint details. Submit drawing showing locations of any construc-tion joints not shown. Drawings shall be on minimum 11 x 17 paper. In-clude all accessories specified and required to support reinforcement.

Comply with ACI Detailing Manual SP 66 and requirements of ACI 315.

1) Show all bar splice locations and lap lengths. Show the placement of all required additional reinforcement (around openings, at cor-ners, etc.) as shown on the Drawings.

2) Bill of materials (bar list). Show the placement of each bar in the bill of materials on the placing drawings.

3) Bar bending details. Reference bars to the same identification marks shown on the placing drawings. Include standard bending diagrams in the submittal, as applicable.

4) Identify the grade of reinforcing steel in the submittal. Identify any bars that are of a different grade or that have special coatings.

5) Show all items embedded in concrete, including hold downs and an-chor bolts. Where embed items other than the manufacturer listed on the drawings is proposed, submit data for the substituted product for approval prior to installation.

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer Qualifications: A firm experienced in manufacturing ready-mixed con-crete products complying with ASTM C 94 requirements for production facilities and equipment.

B. Comply with ACI 301, "Specification for Structural Concrete for Buildings", includ-ing the following, unless modified by the requirements of the Contract Documents.

1. General requirements, including submittals, quality assurance, acceptance of structure, and protection of in-place concrete.

2. Formwork and form accessories.

3. Steel reinforcement and supports.

4. Concrete mixtures.

5. Handling, placing, and constructing concrete.

C. Test Reports: Comply with requirements in “Quality Requirements” in Division 1 Section “General Requirements.”

1. Fine aggregates – Conformity with ASTM C33 standards, including sieve analy-sis, physical properties, and deleterious substance.

2. Coarse aggregates – Conformity with ASTM C33 standards, including sieve analysis, physical properties, and deleterious substance.

3. Cements – Conformity with ASTM C150 standards, including chemical analysis and physical properties for each type.

4. Pozzolans – Conformity with ASTM C618 standards, including chemical analy-sis and physical properties.

D. Concrete Mix Design:

1. Strength Requirements: ASTM C 94.

2. Testing:

a. Slump and Air Content Tests: Samples shall be taken from every truck af-ter discharge of approximately 15 percent of load. If slumps differ by more than 2 inches, the mixer or agitator shall not be used until condition causing this variation is corrected. The equipment for these tests will be furnished by Contractor's certified independent testing laboratory techni-cian.

b. Compression Tests: Test specimens shall be made and cured in accord-ance with ASTM C 31 and tested in accordance with ASTM C 39, using standard 6-inch diameter by 12-inch high cylinders, and will be taken by the Contractor's certified independent testing laboratory technician. Cur-ing, shipment to, and testing by an independent laboratory shall be at the expense of the Contractor. The Contractor shall obtain 4 cylinders for every 50 cubic yards of concrete placed or for each major placement dur-ing the day whichever is more frequent. One cylinder shall be tested at an age of 7 days for information, two at an age of 28 days for acceptance, and one held in reserve to be tested if required.

c. Report results of concrete testing in accordance with Section 1.3.C.

3. Enforcement of Strength Requirements: If the 28-day strength test fails to meet the requirements of ASTM C 94, the Contracting Officer may require that core samples be taken and tested in accordance with ASTM C 42, at Contractor's ex-pense. If the core tests are below strength, if there is evidence of damage by freezing, or if the concrete fails to meet specifications in other ways, the Con-tracting Officer may require that the defective concrete be removed and re-placed at no additional expense to the Government.

E. The Contractor is responsible for quality control, including workmanship and materi-als furnished by subcontractors and suppliers.

1. Inspection or testing does not relieve the Contractor of responsibility to perform the Work in accordance with the Contract Documents.

2. Workmanship: The Contractor is responsible for and shall bear the cost of cor-recting concrete work which does not conform to the specified requirements in-cluding, but not limited to, strength, tolerances, joint types and patterns, and fin-ishes. Correct deficient concrete by means acceptable to the Contracting Of-ficer. The cost of extra work incurred to approve corrective work shall be borne by the Contractor.

F. Record of Work: A record shall be kept by the General Contractor listing the time and date of placement of all concrete for the structure. Such record shall be kept until the completion of the project and shall be available to the Contracting Officer for exami-nation at any time.

G. Preinstallation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site.

PART 2 – PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

A. Formwork: Furnish formwork and form accessories according to ACI 301.

B. Steel Reinforcement:

1. Reinforcing Bars: ASTM A 615, Grade 60, deformed.

2. Plain-Steel Wire: ASTM A 82, as drawn.

3. Plain-Steel Welded Wire Fabric: ASTM A 185, fabricated from as-drawn steel wire into flat sheets.

C. Concrete Materials:

1. Portland Cement: ASTM C 150, Type II or I/II, use one brand of cement throughout project.

2. Normal-Weight Aggregate: ASTM C 33, uniformly graded, not exceeding 1-inch for footings and ¾ inch for walls and slabs.

3. Water: Potable, complying with ASTM C 94.

4. Synthetic Fiber: Fibrillated or monofilament polypropylene fibers engineered and designed for use in concrete, complying with ASTM C 1116, Type III, 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches long.

5. Fly ash will be allowed as a cementitious component of the mix. Fly ash shall conform to ASTM C618 Class C or F. Fly ash shall not exceed 15% of total cementitious material by weight.

D. Admixtures:

1. Air-Entraining Admixture: ASTM C 260.

2. Water-Reducing Admixture: ASTM C 494, Type A.

3. High-Range, Water-Reducing Admixture: ASTM C 494, Type F.

4. Water-Reducing and Accelerating Admixture: ASTM C 494, Type E.

5. Water-Reducing and Retarding Admixture: ASTM C 494, Type D.

E. Vapor Barrier: Polyethylene sheet, ASTM D 4397, not less than 6 mils thick.

F. Joint-Filler Strips: ASTM D 1751, asphalt-saturated cellulosic fiber.

G. Curing Materials:

1. Evaporation Retarder: Waterborne, monomolecular film forming, manufactured for application to fresh concrete.

2. Absorptive Cover: AASHTO M 182, Class 2, burlap cloth made from jute or kenaf.

3. Moisture-Retaining Cover: ASTM C 171, polyethylene film or white burlap-polyethylene sheet.

4. Water: Potable.

5. Clear, membrane-forming Curing Compound: ASTM C 309, Type 1, Class B.

6. Clear, membrane-Forming Curing and Sealing Compound: ASTM C 1315, Type 1, Class A.

2.2 CONCRETE MIXES

A. Comply with ACI 301 requirements for concrete mixtures.

B. Prepare design mixes, proportioned according to ACI 301, for normal-weight concrete determined by either laboratory trial mix or field test data bases, as follows:

1. Compressive Strength (28 Days): 4000 psi.

2. Cementitious Material Content: Minimum of 564 pounds per cubic yard.

3. Maximum Water/Cement Ratio: 0.45.

4. Slump: 4 inches.

a. Slump Limit for Concrete Containing High-Range Water-Reducing Ad-mixture: Not more than 8 inches after adding admixture to plant- or site-verified, 2- to 3-inch slump.

C. Add air-entraining admixture at manufacturer's prescribed rate to result in concrete at point of placement having an air content of 6.0 percent within a tolerance of plus or minus 1.5 percent.

D. Synthetic Fiber Reinforcement: For slabs on grade (building, sidewalks, equipment pads, etc.).

1. Uniformly disperse in concrete mix at manufacturer's recommended rate, but not less than 1.5 lb/cu. yd.

2.3 CONCRETE MIXING

A. Ready-Mixed Concrete: Comply with ASTM C 94.

1. Discharge all concrete from truck mixer, agitator, or other transporting device not later than 1-1/2 hours or 300 revolutions of the drum after the mixing water has been added.

2. When air temperature is between 85 and 90 deg F, reduce mixing and delivery time from 1-1/2 hours to 75 minutes; when air temperature is above 90 deg F, reduce mixing and delivery time to 60 minutes.

3. If delivery trucks cannot meet these requirements, the water and cement must be introduced into the mixer at the project site.

B. Project-Site Mixing: Measure, batch, and mix concrete materials and concrete accord-ing to ASTM C 94. Mix concrete materials in appropriate drum-type batch machine mixer.

1. For mixer capacity of 1 cu. yd. or smaller, continue mixing at least 1-1/2 minutes, but not more than 5 minutes after ingredients are in mixer, before any part of batch is released.

2. For mixer capacity larger than 1 cu. yd., increase mixing time by 15 seconds for each additional 1 cu. yd..

C. Provide batch ticket for each batch discharged and used in the Work, indicating Pro-ject identification name and number, date, mix type, mix time, quantity, and amount of water added. Record approximate location of final deposit in structure.

2.4 PATCHING GROUT

A. Portland cement, water, and fine sand passing a No. 30 mesh sieve.

B. Sikagrout 212 and Sikadur 32 Ni-Mod Manufactured by Sika Corporation, 875 Valley Brooks Avenue, Lyndhurst, NJ 07071, Ph (201) 933-8800 or equal.

2.5 NONSHRINK GROUT

A. Masterflow 928, manufactured by Master Builders, Inc., Construction Products Divi-sion, 23700 Chagrin Blvd., Cleveland, OH 44122, Ph (216) 831-5500, or equal.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION, GENERAL

A. Formwork: Design, construct, erect, shore, brace, and maintain formwork according to ACI 301.

1. Variation from plumb lines and surfaces of column footings and walls shall not exceed 1/8 inch in 10 feet.

2. Variation in linear building lines from established position of columns, piers, or walls shall not exceed 1 inch in any bay of 20 feet or 1 inch in 40 feet or greater.

3. Variation in cross section dimension of footings and thickness of slabs and walls shall not exceed minus 1/4 inch or plus 1 inch.

B. Vapor Barrier: Install, protect, and repair vapor-barrier sheets according to ASTM E 1643; place sheets in position with longest dimension parallel with direction of pour.

1. Lap joints 6 inches and seal with manufacturer's recommended tape.

2. Place vapor barrier over free draining base course compacted with mechanical equipment to elevation tolerances of plus 0 inch or minus 3/4 inch.

C. Steel Reinforcement: Comply with CRSI's "Manual of Standard Practice" for fabricat-ing, placing, and supporting reinforcement.

1. Do not cut or puncture vapor retarder. Repair damage and reseal vapor retarder before placing concrete.

2. Except where shown otherwise on drawings, a minimum concrete coverage for steel reinforcement shall be as follows:

Minimum Cover Cast against and permanently exposed to earth (footings). 3 inches Exposed to earth or weather (foundation Walls, beams, slab and columns 2 inches

D. Joints: Construct joints true to line with faces perpendicular to surface plane of con-crete.

1. Construction Joints: Locate and install so as not to impair strength or appear-ance of concrete, at locations indicated or as approved by CO.

2. Isolation Joints: Install joint-filler strips at junctions with slabs-on-grade and vertical surfaces, such as column pedestals, foundation walls, grade beams, and other locations, as indicated.

3. Control Joints in Slabs-on-Grade: Form weakened-plane control joints, spaced a maximum of 12 feet center to center. Construct control joints for a depth equal to at least one-fourth of the concrete thickness, as follows:

a. Grooved Joints: Form control joints after initial floating by grooving and finishing each edge of joint with tool to a radius of 1/8 inch. Repeat grooving of control joints after applying surface finishes. Eliminate tool marks on concrete surfaces.

E. Tolerances: Comply with ACI 117, "Specifications for Tolerances for Concrete Con-struction and Materials."

3.2 CONCRETE PLACEMENT

A. Comply with recommendations in ACI 304R for measuring, mixing, transporting, and placing concrete.

B. Extra Water:

1. Deliver concrete to site in exact quantities required by design mix.

2. Should extra water be required for workability before depositing concrete, and water/cement ratio of accepted mix design has not been exceeded, General Con-tractor's superintendent shall have sole authority to authorize addition of water.

Any additional water added to mix after leaving batch plant shall be indicated on truck ticket and signed by person responsible.

3. Where extra water is added to concrete it shall be mixed thoroughly for 50 revo-lutions of drum before depositing.

4. Water may be added to the site only once for each batch.

5. An additional slump and air content test shall be performed following the addi-tion of any water.

C. Cold Weather Placing:

1. Protect concrete work from physical damage or reduced strength which could be caused by frost, freezing actions, or low temperatures, in compliance with ACI 306 and as herein specified.

2. When air temperature has fallen to or is expected to fall below 40oF, uniformly heat water and aggregates before mixing to obtain a concrete mixture tempera-ture of not less 50oF, and not more than 80oF at point of placement.

3. Do not use frozen materials or materials containing ice or snow. Do not place concrete on frozen subgrade or subgrade containing frozen materials.

4. Do not use calcium chloride, salt or other materials containing antifreeze agents or chemical accelerators, unless otherwise accepted in mix designs.

D. Hot Weather Placing:

1. When hot weather conditions exist that would seriously impair quality and strength of concrete, place concrete in compliance with ACI 305 and as herein specified.

2. Cool ingredients before mixing to maintain concrete temperature at time of placement below 90oF.

3. Mixing water may be chilled or chopped ice may be used to control temperature provided water equivalent of ice is calculated to total amount of mixing water.

3.3 FINISHING FORMED SURFACES

A. Rough-Formed Finish: As-cast concrete texture imparted by form-facing material with tie holes and defective areas repaired and patched, and fins and other projections exceeding 1/4 inch in height rubbed down or chipped off.

1. Apply to concrete surfaces not exposed to public view.

B. Smooth-Formed Finish: As-cast concrete texture imparted by form-facing material, arranged in an orderly and symmetrical manner with a minimum of seams. Repair and patch tie holes and defective areas. Completely remove fins and other projections.

1. Apply to concrete surfaces exposed to public view or to be covered with a coat-ing or covering material applied directly to concrete, such as waterproofing or dampproofing.

3.4 FINISHING UNFORMED SURFACES

A. General: Comply with ACI 302.1R for screeding, restraightening, and finishing oper-ations for concrete surfaces. Do not wet concrete surfaces.

B. Screed surfaces with a straightedge and strike off. Begin initial floating using bull floats or darbies to form a uniform and open-textured surface plane before excess moisture or bleed water appears on the surface.

1. Do not further disturb surfaces before starting finishing operations.

C. Trowel Finish: Apply a hard trowel finish to surfaces indicated and to floor and slab surfaces to be acid stained or to be covered with resilient flooring or carpet.

D. Nonslip Broom Finish: Apply a nonslip broom finish to surfaces indicated and to ex-terior concrete platforms, steps, and ramps. Immediately after float finishing, slightly roughen trafficked surface by brooming with fiber-bristle broom perpendicular to main traffic route.

3.5 CONCRETE PROTECTION AND CURING

A. General: Protect freshly placed concrete from premature drying and excessive cold or hot temperatures. Comply with ACI 306.1 for cold-weather protection and follow recommendations in ACI 305R for hot-weather protection during curing.

B. Evaporation Retarder: Apply evaporation retarder to concrete surfaces if hot, dry, or windy conditions occur before and during finishing operations. Apply according to manufacturer's written instructions after placing, screeding, and bull floating or dar-bying concrete, but before float finishing.

C. Begin curing after finishing concrete, but not before free water has disappeared from concrete surface.

D. Cure formed and unformed concrete for at least seven days as follows:

1. Curing Compound: Apply uniformly in continuous operation by power spray or roller according to manufacturer's written instructions. Recoat areas subjected to heavy rainfall within three hours after initial application. Maintain continuity of coating and repair damage during curing period.

a. Do not use curing compound where it may adversely effect finishes or coatings. Use only as approved, in writing, by the Contracting Officer.

3.6 NONSHRINK GROUT

A. Use nonshrink grout to fill sleeves and voids under equipment and column bases.

Grout shall be mixed and used in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

Exposed edges shall be smooth, straight, and even.

3.7 REMOVAL OF FORMS AND SHORES

A. The supporting forms and shoring shall not be removed until the members have ac-quired sufficient strength to support their weight and the loads superimposed thereon safely.

B. In no case may any forms or shoring be removed until the time and sequence has been approved by the CO.

C. Earlier removal than specified below may be approved by the CO, based on the weather and tests of job-cured cylinders.

D. All formwork shall be removed without damage to the concrete.

E. The minimum time for forms and shoring to remain in place shall be as follows:

1. Structural slabs and beams: 7 days.

2. Soffits of openings in walls: 7 days.

3. Walls and columns: 32 hours.

4. Slabs on grade and sides of footings: 24 hours.

F. Any request for earlier removal of forms and shoring shall be made to the CO in writ-ing, along with supporting evidence that the safety of the structure will not be im-paired.

G. Shoring shall be adequate in strength and shall be so designed and placed that the load from successive parts of the structure will be transmitted directly through the false-work without creating bending or shearing stresses in the concrete.

H. During the period that the forms are in place on the concrete work, keep wet at all times.

3.8 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Testing Agency: Contractor will engage a qualified independent testing and inspect-ing agency to sample materials, perform tests, and submit test reports during concrete placement. Tests will be performed according to ACI 301.

1. Testing Frequency: Obtain slump tests from every truckload. Obtain one com-posite sample for each day's pour of each concrete mix exceeding 5 cu. yd. plus one set for each additional 50 cu. yd. or fraction thereof.

2. Slump: Test slump of the concrete sample for each strength test and whenever consistency of concrete seems to vary, using ASTM C 143.

3. Test air content for each strength test in accordance with either ASTM C 231, ASTM C 173, or ASTM C 138.

4. Determine temperature of concrete sample for each strength test.

B. Batch Certification

1. A concrete batch certificate containing all items shown on the example in this section shall be completed and furnished to the CO with each load.

2. Concrete Batch Certification Form (page 03300-8) will be supplied by the For-est Service or the contractor may use his own forms.

3.9 DAMAGED OR DEFECTIVE CONCRETE

A. Remove damaged or defective concrete before completion and acceptance of the work and replace with acceptable concrete

2.1 WOOD PRODUCTS, GENERAL

1. Fabricate wood trusses within manufacturing tolerances in TPI 1.

B. Connect truss members by metal connector plates located and securely embedded simultaneously in both sides of wood members by air or hydraulic press.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. Install wood trusses only after supporting construction is in place and is braced and secured.

B. If trusses are delivered to Project site in more than one piece, assemble trusses before installing.

C. Hoist trusses into place by lifting equipment suited to sizes and types of trusses required, exercising care not to damage truss members or joints by out-of-plane bending or other causes.

D. Install and brace trusses according to TPI recommendations and as indicated.

E. Anchor trusses securely at bearing points; use metal framing anchors. Install fasteners through each fastener hole in metal framing anchor according to manufacturer's fastening schedules and written instructions.

F. Securely connect each truss ply required for forming built-up girder trusses.

G. Install and fasten permanent bracing during truss erection and before construction loads are applied. Anchor ends of permanent bracing where terminating at walls or beams.

1. Install bracing to comply with Division 6 Section “Rough Carpentry.”

2. Install and fasten strongback bracing vertically against vertical web of parallel-chord floor trusses at centers indicated.

A. Packing and Shipping: Delivered materials to the site in the Manufacturer's packaging, clearly identified with the product name and manufacturer.

B. Store materials in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Store materials in dry, enclosed area with adequate protection from moisture. Maintain storage temperature ≥ 65oF.

C. Waste Disposal: Provide adequate disposal facilities for non-hazardous waste generated during installation of the system.

1.5 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Maintain temperature range between 65oF and 80oF 48 hours before, during, and 24 hours after installation of flooring.
