About this file
This document is a well log from the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Sheep Experiment Station in Dubois, Idaho (HC 62 Box 2010). The log documents subsurface geological and hydrological findings from a well (Dubois 24, Rain Well, Bldgy 21) drilled beginning August 11, 1937.
The well log presents a detailed stratigraphic column with depth measurements ranging from 0 to approximately 765 feet, identifying successive geological layers including basalt, rhyolite, lava, cinders, lava ash, solid lava, broken lava, gray hard lava, red clay and lava cinders, hard black lava, dark gray lava, gray lava conglomerate, and gray fine sand interspersed with red lava formations. Handwritten technical notes document well development activities, including drilling operations completed in February 1940 using a 9⅝ inch (O.D.) casing set at 20 feet depth, water level measurements, pump installation details (90 GPM, 40 HP, 65 amp motor), and performance testing conducted in June 1920 and subsequent maintenance activities through December 1976. Additional annotations reference water level elevations at 726 feet, a 10-inch casing sealed at specific depth intervals, and an armored intake with 1 gallon per minute water capacity. The document serves as a historical record of the well's construction specifications, geological composition, and operational performance data.
