August 8, 2019 Southeast Alaska Discovery Center (SEADC) Biomass Boiler Removal and Wall Reconstruction Solicitation Number: 12010919Q0097 Pre-Bid Tour The Government showed the 2 contractors the room with the boiler, described the contract requirements to remove the Hurst boiler and all concrete pads, plumbing, conduits, electrical panels, and all hookups to other equipment, so the rooms are left as if the boiler was never there. The wall between the boiler room and the shop will remain as is. The double doors from the shop to outdoors will be removed and the hole filled in with exterior wall construction. The weather wall outside the double doors will be removed.

We looked in the shed that holds the hopper. The boiler originally went into the building through this area. The shed is to end up as it is now, with all boiler appurtenances removed and the openings screened so that birds and other animals cannot enter.

Several questions were asked about the performance of the boiler. The Operation Manual is available for prospective bidders to look at in the Ketchikan Supervisor’s Office by contacting Melinda Kemp at 907-228-6335.

This is an excerpt from a technical paper prepared by the Forest Service: The boiler is a Hurst model HB-180-30 and was built in 2011, with a rated output capacity of 0.75 mmBtu/hr. The boiler has been off line for several years but is in good condition. The Hurst boiler is an advanced combustion system with an under feed stoker, and under-fire and over-fire air. The boiler is capable of utilizing wood fuels with moisture contents ranging from 8% – 50%. Ash removal is a semi-manual operation, and must be raked to the bottom ash auger for removal. A day bin, … feeds the boiler system….
