About this file
This document is a Geotechnical Engineering Report for the Corn Creek Fire Station & Barracks project located in Corn Creek, Nevada. The report details comprehensive subsurface exploration conducted through three borings drilled to depths of 25 and 50 feet, with laboratory testing of soil samples. Key findings include the site's soil composition of fill materials, silty gravel, silty sand, and clayey sand with varying densities, and the presence of caliche at certain depths. The report provides detailed recommendations for earthwork, foundation design, pavement construction, and site preparation, including specific guidance on soil compaction, excavation methods, and foundation support, with considerations for seismic conditions and local building codes.
The geotechnical investigation reveals that the site has non-expansive to low-expansion soils, with groundwater not encountered within the explored depths. The report suggests using shallow foundations with an allowable bearing pressure of 2,500 psf, recommends specific compaction requirements for fill materials, and provides detailed specifications for pavement construction, including both asphalt and Portland cement concrete options. Importantly, the report highlights the presence of caliche and oversized materials that will require special excavation techniques and equipment, and provides comprehensive recommendations for site drainage, moisture protection, and foundation design to ensure structural integrity and long-term performance of the proposed fire station and barracks facilities.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
UES Professional Services 30, LLC (UES), Consultant, has completed a field exploration and geotechnical evaluation for the Corn Creek fire station and barracks project. Mr. Fares Kakhia, representing Akana, authorized UES services on April 4, 2024, in accordance with our executed subcontract, signed August 16, 2022.
The site is located at 16001 Corn Creek Road, near the Corn Creek Visitor Center, in Corn Creek, Clark County, Nevada. The general location of the site is shown on Figure No. 1, Vicinity Map.
The purpose of our services was to provide information and geotechnical engineering recommendations relative to:
• Subsurface soil conditions
• General geology of the area
• Foundation design and construction
• Retaining wall design and construction
• Floor slab design and construction
• Pavement design and construction
• Earthwork
This report is for the purpose of providing geotechnical engineering and/or testing information and requirements. The scope of our services for this project did not include any environmental assessment or investigation for the presence or absence of hazardous or toxic material in structures, soil, surface water, groundwater, or air, below or around this site.
2.0 PROJECT INFORMATION
The project site consists of less than 3-acres and will be developed for the proposed Corn Creek fire station and barracks. It is assumed that the structures will be one and/or two stories in height, of CMU, steel-, and/or wood-frame construction with concrete slab-on-grade lower floors. Structural loads for the proposed buildings were not provided. We have assumed maximum dead- plus live-loads for columns and wall loading at approximately 250 kips and 3.5 kips per lineal foot, respectively. There will be on-site paved areas. It is further assumed that final grades will generally be at or near existing site grades (plus or minus 4 feet). No offsite roadway improvements are planned for at this time.
3.0 SITE EXPLORATION
The scope of our services for this project included a subsurface exploration program. The subsurface exploration program consisted of drilling three (3) borings. Two (2) borings where drilled to depths of approximately 25 feet and the remaining one (1) borings was drilled to approximate depth of 50 feet below existing site grades. The borings were logged during drilling by a graduate geologist and samples were obtained to aid in material classification and for possible laboratory testing. The approximate locations of the borings are shown in Figure No. 2, Site Map. The locations of the borings were determined in the field by approximating distances from existing features or improvements. The locations of the borings should be considered accurate only to the degree implied by the method used. Results of the borings are presented in the Appendix.
4.0 SITE CONDITIONS
4.1 SURFACE
At the time of our exploration, the site generally consisted of a relatively flat storage yard west of the existing Corn Creek field station. An elevated wooden platform was developed on the southern portion of the site.
A shallow berm was developed along the southwestern portion. Vegetation at the site generally consisted of scattered desert weeds and grasses. An unpaved access road was developed east of the site. Site drainage was generally by sheet flow toward the northwest.
4.2 SUBSURFACE
Fill was encountered in all explorations. The fill generally consisted of 1 foot of silty gravel with sand.
However, due to previous site development/grading there could be deeper and/or poorer quality fill in other areas of the site beyond our explorations.
Natural soils at the site generally consisted of medium dense to very dense silty sand with gravel, clayey sand with gravel, clayey gravel with sand; and stiff to very stiff sandy lean clay. Some oversized materials were also encountered within the soil. However, due to nature of drilling, the actual size and quantity of those oversized materials were not characterized. Moderately hard to very hard caliche was encountered in one exploration (Boring B-3) only. Caliche was first encountered at a depth of 23 feet below existing site grade. Laboratory test results indicate that the upper on-site clay soils have a low expansion potential.
Groundwater was not encountered within the depths explored; however, very moist soils were encountered at approximately 49 feet which would indicate the groundwater table would be near that elevation.
Groundwater levels can fluctuate due to seasonal variations, irrigation practices and due to groundwater withdrawal and recharge. The boring logs and laboratory test results presented in the Appendix should be referred to for more detailed information.
5.0 GEOLOGIC INFORMATION
The site is located approximately 8.5 miles northwest of the Las Vegas Valley. This location places the site in an area underlain by thick alluvial deposits (hundreds of feet).
Based on our review of available information, no mapped faults or fissures are present at the project site.
