About this file

This document is a technical guide for the Situation Data Exchange (SDX), developed by Trihydro for Departments of Transportation (DOTs) to integrate and push Traveler Information Messages (TIMs) into a centralized platform. The SDX is a technology platform that allows for the retention and exchange of critical, authenticated road and weather condition data, which can be delivered directly to vehicles through Connected Vehicle (CV) technology. The platform enables third parties like navigation apps and original equipment manufacturers to access standardized and secured TIMs, enhancing traffic safety and operations by following the SAE J2735 standard.

The guide provides step-by-step instructions for DOT personnel to create an account, generate an API key, and set up two-factor authentication for accessing the SDX. It offers both a Beta site for testing integration and a live site for production data, with a sample application available on GitHub for querying and depositing TIMs. The document emphasizes API key security, recommending users keep the key confidential, store it securely, and regenerate it immediately if compromised. Technical support is available through Brandon Payne at bpayne@trihydro.com, and developer documentation can be accessed at https://sdx-service.trihydro.com.

Text version

Overview SDX is a centralized platform for the retention and exchange of critical, authenticated Traveler Information Messages (TIMs). These messages offer essential information on road and weather conditions, as well as incidents like crashes and road closures. Traditionally displayed on dynamic message signs (DMSs), TIMs can now be delivered directly to vehicles through Connected Vehicle

(CV) technology. Third parties, such as navigation apps and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), can access TIMs through the SDX for in-vehicle broadcasts, enhancing traffic safety and operations.

TIMs must be standardized, properly formatted, and secured for in-vehicle delivery. For more details on their structure, refer to the SAE J2735 standard.

This document is intended to be a starting guide on how DOTs can begin pushing data into the SDX.

How DOTs Can Begin Pushing Data into the SDX

After filling out the required fields and clicking on the Register button at the bottom of the page, you’ll be prompted with a confirmation screen. Next, verify your email address by clicking the link in the confirmation email you receive.

Note: If the email doesn’t appear in your inbox within a few minutes, check your spam folder or email quarantine.

Account activation requires two-factor authentication (2FA) which you can set up by following the instructions provided after confirming your email To generate an API key, receive WZDx notifications, and access other extended SDX functionalities like depositing TIMs, your user account must be linked to an organization.

If your organization is already registered with the SDX, you can request to join it. The request will be approved by your organization's admin.

If your organization has not yet registered, contact Shane Zumpf at szumpf@trihydro.com to set up your organization and designate an admin.

Note: To prevent data overlap, only one user account per organization is designated as the organization admin with TIM deposit permissions.

Creating an Account

How to get started:

Visit https://sdx.trihydro.com/ and create an account by clicking Register in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

Registration Page mailto:szumpf@trihydro.com?subject=Request%20to%20Register%20New%20SDX%20Organization https://sdx.trihydro.com/

Generating an API Key

An API key is a unique identifier used to authenticate requests made to an API (Application Programming Interface). It allows the server to identify the calling application or user and verify whether they have the necessary permissions to access the requested resources. API keys are typically included in the request header or URL, making them essential for securing and controlling access to the

API.

To generate an API Key:

First create an account, log in, and ensure you are assigned to an organization. Then, visit https://sdx.trihydro.com/Settings/Index?activeTab=api or access it via the user menu in the upper-right corner of the home page by selecting API Access.

Click Generate API Key.

Copy the API Key once it is generated and record it somewhere safe. We do not store this value and it won’t be displayed again. If you need to generate a new one in the future, you can visit this page to regenerate a new API key.

Note: Regenerating an API key will invalidate your previous key.

Integrating with the SDX

The SDX offers both a Beta site for testing integration and the live site for production data. A sample application for integrating with the SDX and performing most functions, including querying and depositing TIMs, is available on GitHub. To use the sample application, you must have an SDX account assigned to an organization.

The Beta site can be reached at https://sdxbeta.trihydro.com/.

To run the sample application against the Beta site instead of the live site, replace the “REACT_APP_URL” value in the “.env” file with “https://sdxbeta-service.trihydro.com” and follow the instructions in the README.

Developer documentation is integrated with the service at the above sdxbeta-service link for reference.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out for assistance.

Your API key is a sensitive credential that grants access to your account’s functionalities within the SDX. To ensure the security of your data:

Keep your API key confidential. Do not share it publicly or with unauthorized individuals.

Store your API key in a secure location. Consider using a password manager or secure vault.

Regenerate your API key immediately if you suspect it has been compromised. This will invalidate the previous key and prevent unauthorized access.

Developer documentation for the API is available at https://sdx-service.trihydro.com.
