About Working Landscapes
Working Landscapes is a non-profit organization registered in SAM.gov since October 2011, operating primarily in North Carolina with a focus on sustainable agriculture, regional food systems, and community development. The organization runs a regional food hub called Byway Foods and is dedicated to supporting local farmers, developing climate-smart agricultural practices, and creating value-added food products that benefit small, minority producers in rural and economically distressed communities.
Through its federal grant awards, Working Landscapes has secured multiple project grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, including the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities program, the Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Program, and other agricultural initiatives. These grants, totaling approximately $5.6 million, support comprehensive efforts to expand markets for climate-smart agricultural products, develop locally-sourced food products for institutional markets, and provide technical assistance to farmers. The organization has collaborated with numerous partners, including 75 farmers and fishermen, seven food hubs, and five mission-driven food processors, to develop 24 value-added food products for 41 North Carolina institutions serving 200,000 people. Their work focuses on creating opportunities for small and minority producers, implementing climate-friendly production strategies, developing food safety programs, and strengthening regional food system infrastructure across northeastern North Carolina.
