About the company
Wild Fish Conservancy is a nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to preserving, protecting and restoring the northwest’s wild fish and the ecosystems they depend on, through science, education, and advocacy. Through federal grants, Wild Fish Conservancy delivers products and services that contribute to optimal fishery management through applied scientific research.
Wild Fish Conservancy has received federal grants to test and develop pound net technology and other alternative fishing methods that enable selective harvesting of hatchery salmonids while reducing bycatch of endangered salmon species. This supports sustainable commercial salmon fisheries in the Columbia River basin. The conservancy has also received grants to conduct scientific research on pre-spawning mortality of coho salmon, in order to identify potential stormwater improvements to reduce toxics. Additional services provided through federal grants include assessments of large wood supplementation feasibility in the Snoqualmie River to improve salmonid habitat, evaluations of fish passage barriers, riparian restoration, and developing preliminary habitat restoration designs for salmon-bearing streams. Major funding agencies include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) through the Unallied Science Program and other NOAA grant programs. The Recreation and Conservation Office has also awarded grants to Wild Fish Conservancy as a subrecipient to conduct scientific research and develop habitat restoration designs.
