About Michigan Integrated Food & Farming Systems

Michigan Food & Farming Systems (MIFFS) is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting beginning and historically underserved farmers in Michigan. MIFFS connects farmers to resources, fosters farmer networks, and provides technical assistance and training programs.

MIFFS has received several prime federal grant awards to provide outreach, training, and support services to socially disadvantaged, veteran, and beginning farmers and ranchers in Michigan. Through programs like Enhancing Agricultural Opportunities for Military Veterans, MIFFS has expanded their Heroes to Hives beekeeping education initiative across multiple states, offering online modules on business development, risk management, and commercial opportunities. Under the Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged and Veteran Farmers and Ranchers program, MIFFS offers peer support networks, USDA program navigation assistance, marketing support, and farm business/sustainable agriculture curriculum in English and Spanish. MIFFS has also partnered with universities like Michigan State and Minnesota on sub-awards for projects focused on improving technical assistance for underserved producers, developing farmer networks for community resilience, and increasing access to CSA programs and crop insurance among disadvantaged groups. Key partners include USDA agencies like NRCS, NIFA, and the Office of Advocacy and Outreach.
