About Cal-Pep
Cal-Pep, doing business as California Prevention & Education Project, is a health outreach program that focuses on HIV education, prevention, and street outreach, serving the Bay Area since 1984. It is registered as a minority-owned, woman-owned, non-profit organization and community development corporation. CALPEP is one of the first organizations of its kind in the country.
Through federal grant awards, Cal-Pep has provided integrated substance use and mental health services, HIV, STI, and hepatitis testing, treatment, and prevention services specifically directed toward high-risk men who have sex with men (MSM) of color, transgender women of color, and cisgender women of color living in Alameda County, with a special emphasis on African Americans, commercial sex workers, and the homeless. The organization has received a $2 million project grant from the Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to implement the Bay Area Safe Space (BASS) program, which includes evidence-based interventions like Seeking Safety, Peer Recovery Support Services, and Motivational Interviewing. Additionally, Cal-Pep has been a sub-awardee under a grant from the Regents of the University of California, San Francisco, to implement the Healthy Divas intervention, which aims to improve retention in care, treatment adherence, and viral suppression among a cohort of primarily African American transgender women living with HIV in the San Francisco Bay Area.
