About this program
The Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funds training, education, and clinical skills improvement activities for health care professionals and allied health personnel in the prevention, control, and clinical management of gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and other sexually transmitted diseases under Assistance Listing 93.978, with the most recent grant award dated April 1, 2020.
The program remains active but has experienced a significant slowdown in award activity. The portfolio contains 85 total awards spanning from October 2001 to April 2020, with recent grant awards concentrated in 2017 and 2020; the award cadence declined notably in the years immediately preceding the most recent award, with only one award obligated in 2020. Recent awards have funded regional and national instructor-led training centers, community-based approaches to reducing STD disparities, epidemiological studies of syphilis transmission, and public health ethics training. Representative recent awards include a cooperative agreement to the University of California San Francisco for a Regional Instructor-Led Training Center to strengthen state and local health department capacity for STD/HIV intervention services ($8.65 million, awarded April 2020), and a cooperative agreement supporting syphilis epidemiology research in Columbus, Ohio ($2.12 million, awarded May 2017).
Funding concentration remains solely within CDC; all 85 awards obligated $58.6 million in federal dollars. The portfolio is predominantly Project Grants (72 awards, 85 percent) with a smaller share of Cooperative Agreements (13 awards, 15 percent). Individual award magnitudes range widely, from sub-$10 thousand to $8.65 million; median awards in the 2006–2017 period fell between roughly $250 thousand and $1.5 million.
Two grant opportunities posted recently. CDC-RFA-PS-27-0005, "The National Network of STI Prevention Training Centers (NNPTC)," posted July 28, 2026, seeks to support development and dissemination of education, training, and technical assistance for clinicians and disease intervention specialists to improve STI patient care, with unrestricted eligibility. CDC-RFA-PS-27-0237, "Holistic and Evidence-Informed Wellness for STI Prevention," posted August 10, 2026, supports a national coalition for comprehensive sexual health and wellness frameworks for STI prevention with broad eligibility including higher education institutions, nonprofits, tribal governments, and state and local governments. Both opportunities fund Cooperative Agreements.
