About this program
The Department of Education Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services is awarding grants through the Rehabilitation Long-Term Training program (CFDA 84.129) to support academic training in vocational rehabilitation and related specialty areas, with the most recent round of 75 awards issued October 1, 2025.
The program funds undergraduate and graduate degree programs, certificate training, and clinical preparation in rehabilitation counseling, vision rehabilitation therapy, orientation and mobility services, assistive technology, and specialized training for individuals with mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, blindness, or deafness. Grantees must award at least 65 percent of project funds as scholarships to students enrolled in the programs, covering stipends, tuition, fees, books, supplies, and travel. Recent awards funded master's programs in rehabilitation counseling at universities including Springfield College ($364,183), clinical rehabilitation training for persons with mental illness, undergraduate education in rehabilitation services, and workforce development initiatives addressing state-federal vocational rehabilitation system needs.
The program is exclusively Project Grants; all 754 awards in the portfolio are structured as Project Grants. The Department of Education Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services dominates funding, accounting for 726 awards worth $344.5 million in federal dollars obligated, with a secondary Department of Education funding line contributing 28 awards totaling $17.1 million. Combined federal and non-federal obligations across the portfolio total $736.3 million, indicating substantial matching or cost-share contributions from recipients. Individual awards typically range from $175,815 to $391,074, with recent October 2025 grants clustering around $220,000 to $240,000.
Program activity accelerated significantly in fiscal 2025, with 75 awards issued compared to 1 in 2024.
