Supporting the Use of Traditional Indigenous Foods in the Child Nutrition Programs
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is seeking applications for up to four cooperative agreements totaling $2 million to support the use of traditional Indigenous foods in child nutrition programs. Eligible applicants are organizations led and staffed primarily by members of Federally Recognized Tribes and/or Native Hawaiians, who will provide tailored training and technical assistance to school food authorities serving tribal communities. The funding aims to address barriers, build capacity, develop culturally relevant resources, establish procurement relationships, and engage communities to increase inclusion of traditional Indigenous foods in the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Summer Food Service Program, and other child nutrition initiatives. Applications will be evaluated on organizational readiness, project effectiveness, staffing, management, budget, and evaluation plans, and are due by March 18, 2024. Grantees will receive between $250,000 and $500,000 each to execute their projects over a two-year period of performance from May 2024 to April 2026. The cooperative agreements will support organizations serving different regions of the contiguous United States, Alaska, or Hawaii to provide localized training and technical assistance tailored to the tribal communities in their designated area.
