About this program
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is funding workforce education and training programs in food and agricultural sciences at Hispanic-serving institutions under CFDA 10.223, with the most recent grant awards issued on September 15, 2024, and an open application deadline of December 3, 2026.
The program funds education, applied research, and community development initiatives that attract underrepresented students into food, agriculture, natural resources, and human sciences careers and strengthen postsecondary instruction in these disciplines. Recent awards have supported food safety workforce development (SUNY Orange), poultry science education spanning multiple states with online modules and industry certifications, culturally relevant experiential learning in apparel merchandising and engineering, climate-smart agriculture training for underrepresented farmers, and nutrition and dietetics pathways. Projects emphasize experiential learning, mentorship, industry partnerships, curriculum development, and career readiness workshops targeting Hispanic and other underrepresented populations.
The program is nearly entirely Project Grants (621 of 622 awards), with a single Cooperative Agreement in the recent portfolio. NIFA has funded all awards reported, with 409 Project Grants totaling $102.6 million federal dollars and 213 additional awards totaling $95.2 million, for a combined federal obligation of $197.8 million across the portfolio. Eligible applicants are public and nonprofit Hispanic-serving institutions with a minimum of 25 percent undergraduate full-time Hispanic enrollment.
Recent award magnitudes range from approximately $290 thousand to $1.2 million, with typical awards clustering near $400 thousand to $1 million for four-year projects. Award volume has held steady at 22 to 31 awards annually over the past five years. The portfolio spans 24 years of funding history, with active grant-making continuing through 2024.
