About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Transition Award (Parent F99/K00—Clinical Trial Not Allowed) with an application due date of April 8, 2029. This fellowship supports promising graduate students as they complete doctoral research training and transition into mentored postdoctoral career development in research areas relevant to participating NIH Institutes and Centers; candidates may not propose to lead independent clinical trials but may participate in mentor-led clinical trial research.
Eligible applicants are currently enrolled doctoral candidates in PhD or equivalent research degree programs (EngD, DNSc, DrPH, DSW, PharmD, ScD) at institutions offering research doctorates, with one to two years remaining before degree completion. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Participating NIH institutes and centers include the Office of the Director, National Eye Institute, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institute on Aging, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Cancer Institute, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, and the Tribal Health Research Office.
The award provides up to five years of support across two phases: the F99 predoctoral phase (one to two years) providing stipends aligned with Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA rates, tuition and fees, and institutional allowances; and the K00 postdoctoral phase (up to three years) providing salary, fringe benefits, and research development support. Applications are reviewed by scientific peer review groups and national advisory councils. Rolling application deadlines occur in August, December, and April each year, with earliest start dates beginning approximately three months following each submission deadline through December 2029. Awards are contingent on successful PhD completion, securing a full-time postdoctoral position at a different institution than the doctoral location, and submission of a K00 transition application within four months of assuming the postdoctoral role. The program is forecasted; a formal NOFO will be published to provide complete application details and specific restrictions.
