About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is forecasting a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) program under the R25 mechanism supporting innovative educational activities for pre-kindergarten through grade 12 students and teachers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, with rolling application deadlines extending through May 25, 2029.

The program supports five primary activity categories: courses for skills development, research experiences, mentoring activities, curriculum or methods development, and outreach activities. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits with and without 501(c)(3) status, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, independent school districts, tribal organizations (both federally recognized and not federally recognized), and faith-based organizations. Foreign organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are ineligible. No cost sharing is required.

Direct costs are limited to $250,000 annually per award, with indirect costs reimbursed at a fixed 8 percent of modified total direct costs. The maximum project period is five years. The program particularly encourages applications from resource-limited institutions and those emphasizing quantitative and computational skills development.

The program director/principal investigator must devote a minimum of 2.0 person-months per year (up to 4.8 with justification) and must be an established investigator capable of providing administrative and scientific leadership. Individuals may serve as PD/PI on no more than one active SEPA at a time; institutions may submit multiple distinct applications provided each is scientifically distinct.

The program is administered by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) with co-funding available from the National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institute on Aging, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, and the Office of Research on Women's Health. Rolling deadlines occur on September 25, 2026; January 25, 2027; May 25, 2027; and continuing quarterly through May 25, 2029.

All applications must include a comprehensive research education program plan addressing program rationale, objectives, scientific focus, faculty qualifications, participant selection, institutional commitment, responsible conduct of research instruction, evaluation metrics, and a dissemination plan including a website launched within six months of award. Applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov, ASSIST, or institutional system-to-system solutions after completing required registrations in SAM.gov, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov. Assistance Listing numbers include 93.313, 93.310, 93.242, 93.279, 93.855, 93.307, 93.859, 93.286, 93.121, 93.172, 93.361, 93.213, and 93.867.
