About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health seeks applicants for the NIH Research Educational Program—Mentoring Activities & Networks (R25/UE5), a cooperative agreement and grant opportunity supporting mentorship program development and networks to strengthen professional development and improve mentorship quality across biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research careers, with a rolling application due date of May 5, 2029. Clinical trials are not allowed. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, independent school districts, special district governments, for-profit organizations, and small businesses. The sponsoring institution must provide institutional commitment through adequate staff, facilities, and educational resources; institutions with existing NRSA training grants (T32) or other federally funded training programs may apply provided the proposed educational experiences are distinct from those receiving federal support. Foreign organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible. Award budgets are typically no more than $500,000 in direct costs with a maximum 5-year project period. Indirect costs are reimbursed at 8 percent of modified total direct costs rather than negotiated rates. The NIH Office of the Director and 16 participating institutes and centers administer the program, with potential co-funding from the Office of Research on Women's Health, the INCLUDE Project, and the Office of Data Science Strategy. All PD/PIs must have eRA Commons accounts and ORCID registration; at least one PD/PI must have a record of using rigorous biomedical research in a relevant field. Applications require institutional commitment letters, evaluation plans, dissemination plans, plans for instruction in reproducibility and responsible conduct of research, and detailed descriptions of recruitment strategy, participant selection, and program outcomes. Participants may receive compensation for required activities, travel support, and short-term housing; R25 support cannot replace NRSA institutional training programs or provide salary supplementation to individuals supported by K, T, or F awards. The program expects to fund education across high school through established investigator career stages with emphasis on U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
