About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is forecasting applications for the NIH Research Education Program (R25)—Courses, Curriculum & Methods under PAR-27-034 with a due date of May 25, 2029, supporting educational activities that complement workforce training in biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research across 19 participating NIH institutes and centers.
Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, independent school districts, state governments, tribal governments (both federally and non-federally recognized), special district governments, for-profit organizations, public and private higher education institutions, county governments, city/township governments, public or Indian housing authorities, and small businesses. Foreign organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible. Clinical trials are not permitted under this mechanism. Institutions with existing Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award institutional training grants (e.g., T32) or other federally funded training programs may apply provided the proposed educational experiences remain distinct from those receiving federal support.
The program will primarily focus on courses for skills development and curriculum and methods development. Applications may incorporate mentoring, research, and outreach elements to prepare participants for careers addressing the nation's biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs. Award budgets typically do not exceed $500,000 in direct costs, with maximum project periods of five years. Indirect costs are reimbursed at 8 percent of modified total direct costs.
Applications must address proposed research education program descriptions, program director and principal investigator qualifications, program faculty credentials, participant selection strategies, institutional environment and commitment with adequate staff and facilities, plans for instruction in reproducibility and responsible conduct of research, evaluation plans, and dissemination plans. Applicants must complete registrations in SAM, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov before submission. Scientific review occurs through peer review groups assessing significance, investigator qualifications, innovation, approach, and institutional environment, followed by secondary review by appropriate advisory councils. Funding decisions are based on scientific merit, program priorities, and available funds. Quarterly application deadlines occur on September 25, January 25, and May 25 through 2029, with review cycles in March, July, November, and subsequent months.
