About this opportunity
This federal grant opportunity, issued by the Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health (NIH), aims to solicit applications for pilot projects to identify new druggable targets for pain within the understudied druggable proteome. The funding supports generation of preliminary data and tools around eligible understudied proteins, with the goal of jumpstarting research on understudied proteins in the context of pain and pain management. The opportunity is part of the NIH Helping to End Addiction Long Term (HEAL) initiative to accelerate the development of novel medications to treat opioid addiction. Eligible applicants include a wide range of entities such as nonprofits, higher education institutions, small businesses, and government organizations. The proposed research should focus on basic biochemical and/or biological work to further characterize understudied proteins for potential pain management applications.
Award values and durations are not explicitly stated, but recent grants under the related research programs have ranged from smaller exploratory grants around $100,000 to larger multi-year awards exceeding $1 million. The research activities are expected to be conducted at the facilities of the selected award recipients across the United States.
Synopsis
The purpose of this notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is to solicit applications for pilot projects to identify new druggable targets for pain within the understudied druggable proteome. Awards will support generation of preliminary data and/or tools around eligible understudied protein(s) listed in this NOFO. This NOFO is intended to jumpstart research on understudied proteins within the context of pain and pain management and provide applicants with sufficient funding to perform basic biochemical and/or biological work to further the characterization of understudied proteins to identify new druggable targets for pain. This NOFO is part of the NIH Helping to End Addiction Long Term (HEAL) initiative to accelerate the development of novel medications to treat all aspects of the opioid addiction cycle, including progression to chronic use, withdrawal symptoms, craving, relapse, and overdose.
