About this opportunity

The Forest Service Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy RFA 2024 seeks applicants to support the goals of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy across Midwestern and Northeastern states. Applicants such as state and local governments, nonprofits, tribes, and higher education institutions may apply to restore landscapes resilient to fire and create fire-adapted communities through partnerships and assistance to underserved communities. Applications are due January 16, 2024 and will be evaluated based on alignment with National Cohesive Strategy goals, project effectiveness, and wildfire risk focus.

Successful applicants will receive funding ranging from $25,000 to $300,000 requiring a 100% match to conduct hazardous fuel reduction, prescribed burning, vegetation management, and fire prevention education across non-federal lands in Midwestern and Northeastern states through 2029 under the State & Private Forestry Cooperative Fire Assistance and State & Private Forestry Hazardous Fuel Reduction programs administered by the Forest Service.

Synopsis

The U.S. Forest Service supports moving toward shared stewardship across Landscapes as part of a conceptual framework for making strategic investments across landscapes to co-manage wildfire risk and achieve positive outcomes at the most appropriate scale. Within this framework, Eastern Region Cohesive Fire Strategy Competitive Request for Applications is designed to support and carry out the first two goals of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy (NCS) across the Midwestern and Northeastern States as well as meet the intent of the current year budget direction. These first two national goals are:

  1. Restore and Maintain Landscapes: Landscapes across all jurisdictions are resilient to fire-related disturbances in accordance with management objectives.
  2. Create Fire Adapted Communities: Human populations and infrastructure can withstand a wildfire without loss of life and property.
