About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center is soliciting applications for the Emerging Global Leader Award (K43 Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed) with a deadline of December 3, 2026. Applicants must be early-career research scientists from low- or middle-income countries (as defined by the World Bank, including low-income, lower-middle-income, and upper-middle-income countries) holding junior faculty positions at LMIC academic or research institutions; the award explicitly prohibits applicants from upper-middle-income G20 member nations except those in Sub-Saharan Africa. Only non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities and foreign institutions in LMICs are eligible; non-domestic components of U.S. organizations may not apply.

The award provides three to five years of protected research time and support for mentored career development. Applicants must propose research relevant to their country's health priorities under the mentorship of both LMIC and U.S. mentors. Research experience in clinical trials led by a mentor or co-mentor is permitted; applicants proposing to lead an independent clinical trial, conduct a clinical trial feasibility study, or lead an ancillary clinical trial must apply to the companion FOA instead.

Eligible applicants come from any health-related discipline and include scientists from low-income, lower-middle-income, and upper-middle-income countries as defined by the World Bank. The award mechanism is a grant. Career development activities and a research project addressing the applicant's country health priorities form the core deliverables. This is a K43 mechanism under the Fogarty International Training and Research program (CFDA 93.989, International Research and Research Training). Applications undergo dual review: initial scientific merit assessment followed by secondary review by the Fogarty International Center Advisory Board, with funding decisions made by FIC program officers and executive leadership. Applications are subject to standard NIH record retention requirements (three years from FSR submission date). The source does not specify an award ceiling, floor, or expected number of awards.

Synopsis

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing research that does not involve leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary study to a clinical trial. Applicants to this FOA are permitted to propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor. Applicants proposing a clinical trial or an ancillary clinical trial as lead investigator, should apply to the companion FOA PAR-.The purpose of the Fogarty Emerging Global Leader Award is to provide research support and protected time (three to five years) to an early career research scientist from a low- or middle-income country (LMIC) who holds a junior faculty position at an LMIC academic or research institution, as defined by the World Bank (http://data.worldbank.org/about/country-classifications/country-and-lending-groups , including low-income, lower-middle-income, and upper-middle-income countries). This intensive, mentored research career development experience is expected to lead to an independently funded research career at the LMIC institution or in another LMIC. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications from LMIC scientists from any health-related discipline who propose career development activities and a research project that is relevant to the health priorities of their country under the mentorship of LMIC and U.S. mentors.

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Applications for the K43 award must be submitted by academic education or research institutions in LMICs (as defined by the World Bank (http://data.worldbank.org/about/country-classifications/country-and-lending-groups; low-income, lower-middle-income, and upper-middle-income countries are included). FIC's Country Eligibility Notice (NOT-TW-12-011 Notice of Change in Country Eligibility for Fogarty International Training Grants ) applies to this NOFO and states that for competing and re-competing research training grant applications (including the K43 mechanism), with the exception of Sub-Saharan African countries, FIC will no longer accept applications from, or applications that involve training of scientists from upper-middle-income countries that are also members of the G20 major economies (http://www.g20.org/en/members).
