About this opportunity
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office is soliciting proposals for innovative research that enables revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems with national security applications, with applications due August 27, 2027. Research resulting primarily in evolutionary improvements to existing capabilities is explicitly excluded.
All responsible sources capable of satisfying government needs may submit proposals. Federally Funded Research and Development Centers, University Affiliated Research Centers, and Government Entities are ineligible. Procurement Contracts and Other Transaction proposers must achieve CMMC Level 1 compliance at proposal submission; some efforts may require CMMC Level 2. Cooperative Agreement proposers are not subject to CMMC requirements.
Funding instruments include Procurement Contracts, Cooperative Agreements, Other Transactions for Research, and Other Transactions for Prototypes. No award ceiling is specified; recent awards under the Research and Technology Development program (CFDA 12.910) have ranged from under $200,000 to multi-million-dollar commitments. An accelerated award option is available for proposals not exceeding $2 million, with awards issued within 30 days of selection notification for proposers accepting prescribed terms and conditions.
Work is performed at locations specified by proposers; performance period structure is determined by individual awards. Four technical thrust areas are identified: Materials, Manufacturing, and Energy Systems; Sensing, Measuring, and Affecting; Math, Computation, and Processing; and Complex, Dynamic, and Intelligent Systems.
University prime proposers may include an optional Fundamental Defense Research Talent Award providing up to $150,000 annually for U.S. citizen graduate students or postdoctoral researchers. Proposers must first submit an executive summary or abstract for DARPA guidance before submitting full proposals. Evaluation criteria are overall scientific and technical merit, potential contribution to DARPA mission, offeror capabilities and related experience, plans and capability to accomplish technology transition, and cost realism. CFDA 12.910. Abstract question deadline is August 6, 2027.
