About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the BRAIN Initiative: Preclinical Proof of Concept for Novel Recording and Modulation Technologies in the Human CNS (R18 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed), with applications due January 28, 2027. Awarded activities will translate novel recording and modulation technologies for treating, diagnosing, or understanding central nervous system diseases and disorders from proof of concept through readiness for first-in-human studies. Technologies may incorporate any signal modality—electrical, optical, magnetic, acoustic, or combinations thereof. Diverse team-based applications integrating appropriate domains of expertise are encouraged.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and other), special district governments, independent school districts, and public or Indian housing authorities. Other eligible applicants include HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, AANAPISIs, TCCUs, and faith-based or community-based organizations. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities are not eligible to apply, though foreign components of U.S. organizations are allowed as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement.

The program falls under multiple parent grant mechanisms within NIH, including Mental Health Research Grants (CFDA 93.242), Alcohol Research Programs (93.273), Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (93.279), Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research (93.865), Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders (93.173), Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health (93.286), Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (93.853), Research and Training in Complementary and Integrative Health (93.213), Aging Research (93.866), and Vision Research (93.867). Applications are evaluated for scientific and technical merit through peer review and approved applications compete for available funds based on program relevance and balance.

Synopsis

Awarded activities will facilitate the translation of novel recording and modulation technologies that can be used to treat and/or diagnose central nervous system (CNS) diseases and disorders and to better understand the human CNS, from proof of concept up to the stage of readiness for first in human (FIH) studies. Technologies may incorporate any signal modality (e.g., electrical, optical, magnetic, acoustic) or a combination thereof. Diverse team-based applications that integrate appropriate domains of expertise are encouraged.

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.
