About this opportunity
The Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), specifically the National Weather Service (NWS) Radar Operations Center, has issued a Special Notice seeking information about replacing the RF Power Monitor used in WSR-88D NEXRAD Doppler Radar systems. The current Power Monitor, which reached end-of-life in 2018, is critical for measuring and tracking transmitter power fluctuations across 159 operational radars in the continental United States and overseas locations. The monitor currently in use has specific technical requirements, including a frequency range of 2.7-3.0 GHz, 50O RF input impedance, and the ability to handle average power input of 1-10mW. The existing units are manufactured by Narda (466B-1) and General Microwave (N425-838). This Request for Information (RFI) is designed to gather market intelligence about potential replacement technologies.
The primary purpose of this Special Notice is market research and information gathering, with no guarantee of a future contract or solicitation. Interested contractors are invited to submit responses by January 7th, 2025, via email to Taylor Wisneski, using the subject line "NEXRADRFPOWER00001". The RFI is open to all vendors without specific set-aside restrictions, and participants should understand that the government will not reimburse any costs associated with responding to the notice. Respondents are advised to clearly mark any proprietary or confidential information, which will be held in confidence. The technical specifications for the replacement RF Power Monitor include operating at elevations up to 3,300 meters MSL, maintaining a maximum input VSWR of 1.5:1, and meeting precise performance parameters. All submissions will become the property of the Federal Government and will not be returned, serving solely as part of the NWS's comprehensive market research effort.
