About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command issued a notice of intent to award a sole-source contract for automated apheresis equipment to Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies by June 8, 2026. The Robertson Blood Center at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in Fort Hood, Texas requires one Trima Accel automated apheresis system under a new firm-fixed-price contract funded with FY26 Defense Health Program dollars. The Trima Accel is the only technology capable of concurrently collecting any combination of platelets, plasma, and red blood cells from a single donor in one appointment, a capability competing systems including the Haemonetics NexSys PCS and Fresenius Kabi Aurora Xi cannot meet due to plasma-only specialization. Operational advantages include procedure times up to 40 percent shorter than comparable devices and standardization across other Armed Services Blood Program blood donor centers already using the Trima platform. Market research conducted January 20, 2026 confirmed sole manufacturer status; a seven-day sources sought notice posted to SAM.gov identified one interested vendor whose equipment was deemed technically incapable of meeting multi-component requirements. The justification cites Title 41 U.S.C. 1901 under FAR 12.102(b). Failure to acquire this system would result in estimated 40 percent increase in procedure times, reduced donor throughput, and direct risk to blood product availability for service members. A reference letter from Terumo BCT was received May 20, 2026.
