About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center's Department of Perioperative Medicine has issued a notice of intent to procure surgical supplies, specifically various sizes of antennas and sensors for use with the Emprint SX Ablation Platform with Thermosphere Technology. This cutting-edge equipment provides precise targeting accuracy with real-time 3-D ultrasound navigation for tumor targeting and antenna placement procedures, where failure to accurately place microwave ablation antennas increases the risk of incomplete ablation and local recurrence. The NIH intends to award a firm fixed price purchase order to Covidien Sales, LLC of Mansfield, Massachusetts on a sole source basis, as they are the exclusive provider of this specialized equipment and accessories. The procurement is being conducted under FAR Part 13 Simplified Acquisition Procedures, which allows for single-source solicitation when only one source is reasonably available. Interested parties capable of providing similar products may submit capability statements by July 3, 2025 at 2:00 PM EST, though the government retains sole discretion over whether to conduct a competitive procurement.
This procurement does not utilize any set-aside designation and identifies Covidien Sales, LLC as both the intended sole source contractor and current equipment provider. The specific items required include four short navigation antennas (CA15L2N), six standard navigation antennas (CA20L2N), one long navigation antenna (CA30L2N), and five open ultrasound tracking sensors (CABK8816). The department averages weekly requests for these items throughout the year to support ongoing surgical cases, emphasizing the critical need for continuity of patient care without interruption. While no specific contract value is disclosed, the procurement falls under the simplified acquisition threshold, indicating a value below the current SAT limit. The work will be performed in Bethesda, Maryland, and the equipment supports procedures that require precise microwave ablation antenna placement for effective tumor treatment.

Covidien Sales, LLC is the sole source provider of the equipment and accessories. There is no other known vendor who can provide the supplies.
