About this opportunity
The Air Force Research Laboratory seeks proposals to design, build, test and demonstrate a grid-connected direct current microgrid at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico. Offerors should propose to install on-site generation, energy storage, distribution in DC form, and enable DC loads, interfacing the microgrid with the existing alternating current grid infrastructure. Proposals are due by April 25, 2022 and will be evaluated based on technical and cost factors to advance DC grid technology for potential future adoption.
There is no set-aside designation for this opportunity. The anticipated award is one cost-plus-fixed-fee contract valued at $4.788 million over a base period of 24 months to be performed at Kirtland Air Force Base. The microgrid should serve specific facilities and parking lots on the base. Offerors are encouraged to address in their proposals installation of hardware and software that will become Air Force property, with analysis and testing of both the proposed DC microgrid and current AC system.
Notice text
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Advanced Power Technology Office (APTO) has a need to improve the U.S. Air Force’s ability to provide energy resiliency at Kirtland AFB. This program shall enhance the use of Direct Current (DC) microgrid capability at the Kirtland AFB as well as offer learning/innovation/solutions to installations across the Air Force and DoD enterprises. The DC Microgrid will be made up of a grid that includes some set of DC on-site generation, DC distribution, DC energy storage, and enable DC consumption. It will also interface with the existing Alternating Current (AC) grid/systems. This APTO program will demonstrate through testing the DC microgrid energy system’s ability to interface with the current utility AC grid.
