About this opportunity

Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA), under the Department of Energy Office of Science, is conducting market research to identify potential sources for a highly specialized Spectrometer Vertical Focusing Mirror for the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) project. This is a Sources Sought Notice for a custom diaboloid mirror with stringent technical specifications, including a 50 nm gold coating, 2-degree grazing incidence angle, and precise surface roughness requirements. Interested respondents are invited to submit a Statement of Capabilities (SOC) electronically by June 4, 2025, demonstrating their ability to meet the detailed technical requirements outlined in the draft Statement of Work. The SOC must include company information, SAM UEI number, point of contact details, and business size classification under NAICS code 334516 with a size standard of 1,000 employees. Respondents must confirm the instrument's commercial product status, country of origin, and capability to provide a quote for the requirement.

The pre-solicitation notice indicates no current set-aside, but BSA reserves the right to consider a small business set-aside based on responses received. The mirror is a critical component for a scientific instrument, requiring extremely precise optical and mechanical characteristics, including surface roughness as low as 0.3 nm RMS and compatibility with an ultra-high vacuum environment. While no specific award value is mentioned, the complexity of the mirror suggests a high-precision, potentially high-value procurement. The technical specifications call for a mirror with specific source, tangential, and sagittal focus distances, and the contractor will be required to provide test polishing coupons and comprehensive documentation. The procurement includes a two-year warranty from final acceptance, highlighting the critical nature of the component's performance and quality standards for this advanced scientific instrumentation.
