About this opportunity
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service, through its National Reconditioning Center located in Grandview, Missouri, is conducting market research for repair services of Differential Planetary Gearboxes used in the NEXRAD (Next Generation Weather Radar) system. These gearboxes are critical components that enable antenna movement in both horizontal and vertical directions across 158 NEXRAD sites nationwide, and their failure directly impacts the radar's ability to detect severe weather and issue timely public warnings. The procurement will be structured as a 5-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract, and prospective vendors must demonstrate capability to restore gearboxes (ASN: R400-2A1A3A3A1, NSN: 3010-01-436-0701) to "Like New" condition per specification drawing 14636-5003 Rev T. Vendors must provide comprehensive repair services including component replacement, quality assurance checks, 1-year warranty against material defects and workmanship, proper packaging and shipping capabilities, and detailed deliverables such as test data and Certificates of Conformance. Responses to this Sources Sought notice are due by January 7, 2026, and interested parties should submit capability statements clearly addressing their qualifications and repair capabilities. This Sources Sought notice is for market research and planning purposes only; issuance does not obligate the Government to issue a formal solicitation or procure any services.
This notice includes no set-aside designations, and no incumbent contractors are identified in the pre-solicitation materials. Current inventory data indicates NOAA maintains only 3 units in stock with a weekly issue rate of approximately 0.1 units, providing roughly 33.3 weeks of supply, while the average repair turnaround time currently stands at 290 days. Although specific award values and budget ranges are not disclosed in this pre-solicitation notice, the 5-year IDIQ structure and the operational criticality of maintaining 158 NEXRAD systems suggest a substantial ongoing procurement need. The NAICS classification for this opportunity is 811210 (Electronic and Precision Equipment Repair and Maintenance), indicating the technical expertise required for this specialized gearbox repair work. Prospective vendors should carefully review the Statement of Work document and clearly mark any proprietary information in their capability statements, as responses cannot be accepted as formal offers and the Government assumes no obligation to compensate vendors for information provided during this market research phase.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Weather Service (NWS), and National Reconditioning Center (ROC), located in Grandview, MO is conducting market research seeking information regarding capabilities for an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contact (IDIQ) to repair the Differential Planetary Gearbox for the NEXRAD.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) operates 158 Next Generation Weather Radars (NEXRAD) across the country. These gearboxes are used within those 158 NEXRAD sites. The NEXRAD radars provide the capability to detect severe weather and give weather observers and forecasters the ability to issue early warnings to the general public and aviation users. The gearbox is used to move the antenna dish in the horizontal direction or vertical direction while supporting the full weight of the antenna. Failure of the gearbox would prevent movement of the antenna and eliminate the radar’s ability to detect severe weather. There are currently 3 units in stock with a weekly issue rate of .1 (about 33.3 weeks of stock). The average repair turn-around time is 290 days.
The NWS is seeking vendor capabilities for a potential 5 year IDIQ that would involve repairing the subject gearboxes.
