About this opportunity

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is procuring a 420 nm laser system to support quantum metrology research involving rubidium atoms. The laser must be a high-power, spectrally-narrow source tunable between 420-422 nm wavelengths, capable of producing at least 70 mW of power with a laser frequency linewidth of 20 GHz and TEM_00 mode operation. The system must be a new, commercial off-the-shelf product with specific technical requirements including linear polarization, an optical isolator, and the ability to operate in ambient temperatures of 16-26°C with up to 80% relative humidity. NIST will evaluate proposals using a lowest-price, technically acceptable approach under simplified acquisition procedures. Offerors must submit electronic quotations in three volumes (Technical, Price, and Terms/Conditions) by email to Nina Lin and Forest Crumpler by July 31, 2025.

This procurement is designated as a total small business set-aside under NAICS code 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing) with a size standard of 1,000 employees. No information regarding incumbent contractors or specific award values is provided in the solicitation documents. The laser system will be used by NIST's Fundamental Thermodynamics group to excite rubidium atoms from the ground state to the 6P state for advanced quantum metrology experiments. The government explicitly states that no prototypes, used, or refurbished instruments will be considered, and all equipment must be authorized for U.S. sale and shipped in original manufacturer's packaging. Performance will take place at NIST's facility in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
