About this opportunity

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), within the Department of Commerce, intends to negotiate a sole-source acquisition with ION-TOF USA, Inc. of Chestnut Ridge, New York, for a replacement cesium source head for its time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) instrument, with responses due by 1:00 AM EST on November 7, 2026. The sole-source basis is FAR Part 12.102(b), and the acquisition has no set-aside.

NIST reports that the existing cesium source head is non-functional and requires urgent replacement to restore instrument operation. Market research identifies ION-TOF as the sole source for replacement equipment for this NIST-owned instrument. ION-TOF has stated in writing that it is "the only company authorized and capable of offering service and spare parts for the IONTOF range of surface analysis equipment including the TOF-SIMS IV instruments."

The requirement is assigned NAICS 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing), with a small business size standard of 1000 employees, and PSC 6640. No solicitation package will be issued, and the notice is not a request for competitive quotations. Interested parties who regard themselves as capable of fulfilling the requirement may submit responses, which NIST will consider solely to determine whether to conduct a competitive procurement. Inquiries go to Erik.Fycklund@nist.gov.
