The agency cited the need for these proprietary consumables due to the government-owned BioFire instrumentation's inability to use third-party reagents without voiding warranties.

To avoid any wastage in resources, the reagents needed to be brand name. The instrumentation currently in place cannot utilize third party reagents, as they do not currently exist, furthermore, their usage would void any current warranties tied to the instrumentation which requires usage of only the proprietary Biomerieux BioFire Kits. The BioFire instrumentation is government owned and, to procure a new instrumentation to accommodate different reagents would not provide best value to the taxpayer, and more importantly could potentially delay patient care. These reagent kits will be used in the Microbiology Laboratory located in the Pathology and

Laboratory Medicine Service s San Antonio Laboratories of the STVHCS.
