About this file
This document is a technical specification and installation guide for LOCK+LOAD mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls, produced by LOCK+LOAD, a manufacturer of modular cantilever retaining wall systems. The guide provides comprehensive construction procedures and design specifications for retaining walls used in civil infrastructure projects. LOCK+LOAD retaining walls consist of precast concrete panels and counterforts that form independent, modular units supported by surrounding soil reinforcement, primarily geogrid. The system accommodates various wall configurations including vertical walls, tiered walls, curved alignments, and corners, with applications ranging from low garden walls to structures exceeding 60 feet in height when combined with additional soil reinforcement. The installation procedure requires a compacted foundation pad of 6 inches minimum depth of footing gravel compacted to 95% Modified Proctor density, followed by sequential placement of cantilever units, geogrid reinforcement typically installed at mid-panel height, and backfill material compacted in lifts not exceeding 16 inches. The design specifications comply with FWHA-NHI-00-043 guidelines and AASHTO standards, with minimum factors of safety established for sliding (1.5), bearing capacity (2.0), overturning (2.0), internal stability (1.5), and seismic stability (75% of static). Project examples cited include installations in California, Nevada, Brazil, and Utah, demonstrating the system's adaptability to various soil conditions and site constraints.
Construction requirements mandate field observations during installation to verify bearing stratum conditions, soil compaction in the reinforced zone to 95% Modified Proctor, geogrid placement and drainage system compliance with design specifications, and compaction verification through density testing. LOCK+LOAD modules must be purchased from licensed manufacturers, with the northeastern United States supplied through LOCK+LOAD North East at 603-883-3042 or sales@wallsthatwork.com. Contractors must demonstrate knowledge and experience in MSE retaining wall construction, with a LOCK+LOAD representative required onsite during initial construction phases until contractor capability is established. Backfill materials must meet specific gradation requirements with less than 5% material passing a #200 sieve, while drainage fill consists of clean, durable crushed rock between 3/4 and 1 inch. The contractor bears responsibility for confirming existing site conditions, identifying potential conflicts with utilities and structures, and reporting all discrepancies to the design engineer prior to construction commencement.

FENCES AT THE WALL FACE
Many wall types are unable to place fencing and/or barriers close to the wall face--significant setbacks are at times required. LOCK+LOAD’s cantilever concept provides the stability along with the ease of construction necessary to accommodate various fence and barrier installations directly behind the panel adjacent to the wall face. This maximizes land use and ensures safety.
COMPACTION COMPACTION COMPACTION
MSE retaining walls depend on horizontal soil reinforcement. Tension developed in this reinforcement is what restrains horizontal movements in the wall. However, vertical movement (ie: consolidation) and soil interaction with the reinforcement are controlled and ensured only by adequate compaction. The unique cantilever concept allows the specified compaction to be accomplished uniformly and rapidly by large construction equipment, thus ensuring structural equipment and performance.
Golden Valley, Santa Clarita, CA, USA:
This large LOCK+LOAD wall was built on grade to simplify the construction of the barrier, coping, and walkway that top the wall structure. Once again, LOCK+LOAD’s flexible nature was utilized to accomodate the 4”-6” consolidation of the foundation soils during construction. LOCK+LOAD was able to utilize the local soils with geogrid reinforcement, resulting in significant cost savings on the project.
Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, NV, USA:
LOCK+LOAD’s quarried-stone appearance was chosen for the entrance to Caesar’s “Forum.” The ease and speed of installation of this custom structure were advantages of LOCK+LOAD in this location. Price, appearance, and speed all facilitated the timely completion of this now landscaped project.
Sao Paulo, Brazil:
LOCK+LOAD panels and counterforts were manufactured on site, utilizing the new inexpensive casting molds and concrete available to the general contractor. Local soils where used in the reinforced zone, and the panels where easily modified to provide complex configurations around the buildings on site. The massive natural appearance of LOCK+LOAD provided the owner a significant advantage in marketing this project.
Ogden, UT, USA:
This 85,000 sf railroad abutment utilized the strong yet flexible characteristics of LOCK+ LOAD. The large, lightweight components were quickly and easily placed to allow the rapid placement and compaction of the massive approach fills required.
These fills were built over the soft foundation soils of the Great Salt Lake region, requiring the fascia to be capable of consolidating without distress, a unique advantage of the LOCK+LOAD system.
When LOCKED together and LOADED with soil, LOCK+ LOAD is ideal for most types of retaining walls. Made of 5500 PSI fiber and steel reinforced concrete, LOCK+LOAD is perfect for tall GRAVITY, MSE, GRS, and Soil Nail/Anchor walls as well as low height garden walls. LOCK+LOAD economically out-performs the competition while having superior appearance and flexibility in construction.
Every project has a uniquely optimal solution for grading. Whatever the solution, GRAVITY, MSE, Soil Nail, Soil Anchor, GRS the LOCK+LOAD fascia provides superior protection.
Let our technical staff assist you at 603-883-3042 or visit www.lock-load.com for design information.
The standard 16” x 32” (.4m x .8m) quarried-stone finish is massive in appearance yet light enough to be placed by hand.
LOCK+LOAD allows rapid, effective construction us-ing its patented “modular cantilever” element, making LOCK+LOAD the optimum competitive choice.
Every panel is supported by its own counterfort allowing any geometry: vertical walls, walls on grade, tiered walls, and vertical landscaped walls. These versitile panels can be easily trimmed in the field to allow unprecedented design and construction flex-ibility.
The LOCK+LOAD counter-forts make full compaction at the wall face possible, al-lowing fences or barriers to be placed directly at the wall face.

This manual presents the steps necessary in the construction of LOCK+LOAD retaining walls.
“Modular Cantilevered Walls”
Each LOCK+LOAD Cantilever Unit is comprised of a panel and a counterfort. Shipped as units, they are easily assembled at the construction site as shown in the picture above.
LOCK+LOAD has several unique aspects that require procedures diff erent and at times in direct contravention of procedures commonly used in the building of other “Hand Placed” retaining walls.
First and most importantly, LOCK+LOAD is designed specifi cally for the large forces needed to achieve specifi ed compaction throughout the backfi ll.
Second, each Cantilever Unit is independently stable within the soil. LOCK+LOAD concrete parts do not stack on one another, as they are supported by the surrounding soil. This fl exibility allows any inclination, any confi guration or any alignment desired.
Utilizing LOCK+LOAD to achieve consistent specifi ed compaction, results in a stable monolithic mass of reinforced soil protected by an attractive, independent, 5500psi (42 Mpa), cast, reinforced, concrete armor plating.
A LOCK+LOAD Retaining Wall.
Third, LOCK+LOAD allows placement of the soil reinforcement (geo-grid) at the half height of the Cantilever Unit. This ensures the geo-grid’s connection with LOCK+LOAD is identical to the geo-grid reinforcement connection throughout the wall.
INTRODUCTION
Consult Engineer: Locate survey control points and confi rm with the engineer that foundation soils have adequate bearing capacity for the wall height. Once foundation condition and materials are approved, wall construction can begin.
Excavate for the foundation pad: Excavate a 3-foot (1 M) wide foundation allowing for 6” (15cm) min depth of footing gravel. Remove surface vegetation and organic soils as required. If there are elevation steps in the foundation cut each step 16’’ (4cm) higher than the next lower level.
The foundation width must accommodate the LOCK+LOAD cantilevers and any drainage requirements. Drain system design, is site and soil specifi c and must be constructed in accordance with the plan.
Compact foundation pad: Place ¾” (20mm) Minus stone required for grade to a min. 6” (15cm) deep and compact to 95% Modifi ed Proctor (a typical - minimum of 4 passes with a 750lb or larger plate compactor). When the base pad is complete, layout and assemble LOCK+LOAD.
Except for special circumstances always begin the building of the wall from the lowest break point of the alignment.
Ensuring work is always drained.
The Cantilever Units have a unique installation technique.
However, as with any modular construction, becomes a natural and effi cient operation. Like “Bricks and Mortar” the Cantilever Units are positioned and held in the wall by the backfi ll.
FOUNDATION
Place Cantilever Units. Setout pallets and place the panels face down side-by-side along the wall edge.
With the counterforts, assemble the cantilever unit and position along the wall edge. Tilt outwards by placing wedge under Cantilever Units base. The Unit is now placed.
After the LOCK+LOAD Cantilever Units have been assembled and placed, establish a string line for the alignment of the top inside edge of the panel. Set one Cantilever Unit at each end of the section to be constructed as described below. At these locations secure a string line for alignment of the top inside edge of the Cantilever Unit. Several stakes may be added to eliminate sag and double check alignment.
Placing LOCK+LOAD on a grade or a curve are accomplished with appropriate alignment verifi cations.
Setting LOCK+LOAD: Taking a few minutes to be accurate with alignment will ensure the quality of the installation.
1) LOCK the parts together. Using a wedge or similar create a rigid single Cantilever Unit.
2) Plumb the back of the LOCK+LOAD by adjusting the grade under the base.
3) Then level and align the Cantilever Unit with similar grading methods and minor elevation adjustments by sledge blows to wood blocking on the top.
Low Cantilever Units can be raised by tipping them forward and adding gravel under the panel and counterfort to raise the Cantilever Unit elevation.
After some practice this process becomes quick and effi cient, a sign of quality work. Accurate alignment and proper compaction result in excellent wall installations something to be proud of for a long time.
Drainage is always site specifi c. On shorter walls with LOCK+LOAD only, the drain pipe will be located at the rear of the Cantilever Unit, at foundation pad elevation.
On taller walls the drain goes at the back of the soil reinforcement if possible. Check the plans!
Facing Gravel is required at the LOCK+LOAD panel to ensure consistent vertical support maintaining wall alignment and appearance.
Select 3/4’’(20mm) clear crushed rock material, a minimum of 6” (15cm) wide at the top of the Cantilever Unit, spilling on an angle down over the base. This is required on each row. Other non-plastic soils such as coarse sand etc. are feasible facing soils.
Backfi ll thickness at wall face, is 12” (30cm) tapering down to 8” (20cm) for rest of the fi ll. This allows adequate compaction of the backfi ll near the face. Soil compacts to near mid panel height without disturbing the Cantilever Units.
As designed, soil reinforcement is placed, at the mid height, to the back of the panel section and up 3” (75mm), ensuring 100% lap connection. Next lift of backfi ll should be almost 2” (5cm) above the top and then compacted fl ush with the top edge of the panel. Ready for the next row.
Leveling: Using a fl at nose shovel grade the fi rst 5” (15cm) of backfi ll level with the top of previous Cantilever in preparation for the subsequent row.
DRAINAGE & BACKFILL
Compaction operations and soil density tests are completed in the backfi lled reinforced soil zone.
This is to confi rm that what was designed was built.
A performance specifi cation for compaction in LOCK+LOAD area would be: Backfi ll as specifi ed and compact with a minimum of four passes, over 100% of the backfi ll in the zone, with a compactor of a minimum of 800lbs. Two complete compaction operations are required per row of LOCK+LOAD. Compaction to 95% Modifi ed Proctor is typically required and should be checked and verifi ed.
All compaction activity, always begins over the back of the Cantilever Unit fi rst – “LOCKING IT” with gravel prior to moving towards the wall face.
Compact along the horizontal distance of the wall.
Using a large plate compactor at the face and larger roller compactors in the reinforced soil zone
LOCK+LOAD’s Cantilever Units have solved the compaction problems that most “Hand Placed” retaining walls had in the past.
Consistent compaction throughout the reinforced soil zone, specifi cally in the face area, to a uniform specifi ed amount is a requirement for optimal Reinforced Soil Wall behavior.
COMPACTION
Note: THE CONCRETE PARTS DO NOT STACK!!! EACH
CANTILEVER UNIT IS COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT.
Repeat the procedures for placing and setting Cantilever Units on page 5 for constructing the next rows. Location, alignment and elevation need to be checked.
Soil reinforcement, where required, is commonly installed near the mid height of the panel as the fi rst lift of backfi ll is fi nished. The specifi ed reinforcement can be rolled up and have an end trapped at the wall face with facing gravel.
Then, as required unroll the reinforcement and cover with backfi ll. Grading and compacting the backfi ll in preparation for the placement of the next row of LOCK+LOAD.
SUBSEQUENT ROWS
Check the plans to confi rm the grade, as well as the elevation and length of soil reinforcement, matches the original specifi cations. The LOCK+LOAD Cantilever Units are capable of creating walls up to four units high by themselves, with the inclusion of other soil reinforcement LOCK+LOAD becomes a part of a larger structure for walls over 60 feet high.
When the backfi ll is completed the compaction should be checked and approved before construction proceeds.
Once approved, this construction sequence repeats for the next and subsequent rows until the wall is completed.
Assembly detail
It should be noted that like all reinforced soil structures, LOCK+LOAD will consolidate at the same rate as the backfi ll soils maintaining a stress-free wall. Soil below the structure can also consolidate without adding wall stress.
Overall compacted backfi ll soil will compress about 0.8% under its own weight, though minor these compressions should be considered in establishing foundation elevation.
The individual stability of each LOCK+LOAD Cantilever Unit makes almost any confi guration option a possibility.
LOCK+LOAD can be installed vertically or near vertical.
Curved: Alignments can be accomplished in several ways depending on the requirements. Set the fi rst Cantilever Unit and then skip a couple. Then set another LOCK+LOAD, checking off set and elevation.
Returning to set other Cantilever Units afterwards to suit.
For tight curves use half wide Units and construct in the same manner.
Corners: Corners should be wired to adjacent Cantilever Units for support during the compaction process.
Trimming: LOCK+LOAD does not need to be built “on bond” but if it is required, for aesthetic reasons, the Cantilever Units can be trimmed for inside corners and maintaining bond on outsides corners or abutting structures.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Trimming LOCK+LOAD using a diamond blade on a powered cut off saw with a water attachment is ideal.
Aesthetically it is better to spread trimming to several Cantilever Units rather than making a large adjustment to just one.
Cuts can be made to maintain bond, smooth height transition, change grade of installation, abutting an existing structure, accommodate installation around a culvert etc.

The free draining “densely graded” module fill (5/8”->3/4” crushed rock, typical) placed in the first 24” behind the wall panel and over the counterforts shall be deemed compacted when eight passes (4 in each direction) with a minimum 750 Lb vibrating plate compactor have been completed.
Reinforced backfill shall be free of debris and meet the following gradation tested in accordance with ASTM D-422:
Sieve Size (Percent Passing) 2 inch (100%) 3/4 inch (75%) No. 40 (60%) No.
200 (15%)**
Plasticity Index (PI) <15
Liquid Limit <40 per ASTM D-4318.
** Soils having more than 15% passing a 200 sieve must be approved by the project Design Engineer and have an engineered drainage system to insure that a hydrostatic pressure is not built up behind the reinforced soil zone.
The maximum aggregate size shall be limited to 3/4 inch unless field tests have been performed to evaluate potential strength reductions to the geogrid design due to damage during construction.
Material can be site excavated soils where the above requirements can be met. Unsuitable soils for backfill (high plastic clays or organic soils) shall not be used in the backfill or in the reinforced soil mass.
3.13 Tracked construction equipment shall not be operated directly upon the geogrid reinforcement. A minimum fill thickness of 6 inches is required prior to operation of tracked vehicles over the geogrid. Tracked vehicles should not turn while on the geogrid to prevent tracks from displacing the fill and geogrid and damage or slack to result in the geogrid.
3.14 Rubber tired equipment may pass over the geogrid reinforcement at slow speeds less than 5 mph. Sudden braking and sharp turning shall be avoided.
3.15 Final grading in front of and behind the wall shall be achieved such that surface water is directed away from the structure and the reinforcement zone.
3.16 At the end of each day of operation, the Contractor shall slope the last lift of reinforced backfill away from the wall units to direct runoff away from the wall face. The Contractor shall not allow surface runoff from adjacent areas to enter the wall construction site.

LOCK+LOAD is the modularization of the standard design concept of the Cantilever. The
LOCK+LOAD panel and counterfort when combined creates the LOCK+LOAD Cantilever ( LLC) set. Each LLC set stabilizes a block of compacted soil, in essence creating a self stabilized soil block with a concrete face.
t

4O6mm- 16"
The LOCK+LOAD retaining wall solution was developed to take advantage of the self-weight of soil to restrain horizontal loads from that same soil. The weight of soil mass being 3 times greater than the resultant horizontal soil load, this is the important ratio considered in the design ofthe LOCK+LOAD solution. LOCK+LOAD Cantilever (LLC) sets are proportioned to take full advantage of this and restraint always significantly exceeds horizontal soil load.
Engineerinp
LOCK+LOAD Cantilever (LLC) sets are independently deployed and are supported only by the surrounding soil.
406mm- 16', This individuality allows for installation of LOCK+LOAD walls in almost any configuration, level or on grade, battered or vertical, curved or straight, one or many and all potentially in the same wall.

LLC sets do not stack on one another, therefore the elastic compression of the backfill under its own weight, during and after construction (a minor movement) is absorbed without stress as the LLC sets move with the backfill. This minor movement of less than 1% occurs with all systems. The LLC sets dealwith the consolidation while remaining stress free within the reinforced zone as the LLC sets move with the soil as it adjusts. The LOCK+LOAD solution is great at responding to any and all potentral soil compression since LLC sets are completely independent and individually stable.

LOCK+LOAD Cantilever sets are comprised of a panel (90 lbs) and counterfort (40 lbs). The set is manufactured utilizing wet cast, air-entrained, fiber and steel reinforced, 5500psi ( 42Mpa) concrete Shipping is done on pallets, each pallet holding 14 sets, weighing approximated 1850 lbs and providing about 50 square feet of wall face.
LLC sets and blocks of stabilized soil can be used to create LOCK+LOAD walls 4 rows or 5' 4" (
1.5M) high. Taller walls require LOCK+LOAD to act as a stabilized soil facing for a larger reinforced soil structure such as : Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE), Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS), Soil Anchors and Nails., GRS, Soil Anchors - Nails, zero fines concrete, Daisy-Chain etc.. LOCK+LOAD installation remains virtually the same as only the soil reinforcement may vary in length, type and location. Since LLC sets are independent there is no vertical accumulation of stress.
