About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document for an AHEC (presumably a federal or government agency) dust collection system procurement.
The document addresses two key vendor inquiries regarding system specifications and installation requirements. For the airflow requirement, the contracting officer clarifies that vendors must design the dust collector to support approximately 3,895 CFM system airflow based on all shop equipment operating simultaneously, while maintaining approximately 4,000 FPM transport velocity throughout the ductwork to keep wood dust entrained. The system must be an outdoor-rated, high-efficiency fabric filter system specifically designed for combustible wood dust collection. Regarding the physical constraints of the installation location, the contracting officer explicitly states that vendors are prohibited from performing any construction work, including concrete slab extension. The vendor must provide and install a compliant system that fits within the existing 107" long x 62" wide pad that has already been coordinated with DPW (Department of Public Works). DPW retains responsibility for any structural or pad construction requirements, establishing a clear division of responsibilities between the contractor and government entities.

Questions for AHEC Dust Collection
1. Should we assume that all of the shop equipment from the equipment list will be in use at once, and the total airflow requirement is based on all pickups being open (3,895 CFM based on the provided table)? Or can we assume that 3-4 machines will be in use at one time, reducing the overall airflow requirement for the system?
ANSWER: See Product Description 3.1
• First sentence: The dust collector shall be an outdoor-rated, high-efficiency fabric filter system designed specifically for combustible wood dust collection and sized to support approximately 3895 CFM system airflow.
• Last sentence: The system must provide sufficient total CFM to meet equipment demand while maintaining approximately 4,000 FPM (feet per minute) transport velocity throughout the ductwork to keep wood dust entrained.
2. The pad for locating the collector is 107" long x 62" wide. To properly size a dust collector for the full air flow requirement (3,895 CFM, assuming all machines in use at once), there is not enough space. Quoting an undersized collector to fit the footprint restrictions is likely to result in performance issues (filter plugging, low suction) typical of insufficient filter area. Should we include in our proposal the cost of pouring a concrete pad extension to fit a right-sized collector?
ANSWER: The vendor will NOT do any construction (including slab). The vendor will provide and install a system that is compliant with the product specifications provided. The collector must fit on the existing slab that has been coordinated with DPW, who is responsible for any structural/pad construction.
