The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) has a requirement for five optical tables - four 4.9 by 10 feet and one 4 by 6 feet - to support experiments, testing, and research at their Geospatial Research Laboratory. The tables must have specific features including stainless steel tops, pre-drilled holes, pneumatic isolation, and other requirements outlined in the "System Requirements" table. Vendors must deliver and install the tables at the destination location in Building 7880 at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Questions about the delivery path, room dimensions, and other logistical details are addressed in the Q&A. Question and Answer Document, Rev. 1
17 June 2024
The following questions and answers are provided for informational purposes only:
Question 1 - Can you provide the moving path information from the loading dock of 7880 Leaf Rd, Fort Belvoir, VA to each of five destination rooms where the five optical tables will be set up?
Answer: Please see Attachment 1 - “Table Install Route”. It includes an illustration of the travel path between the loading dock and laboratory. The Government has tried to include as many relevant details as possible.
a. How far are the rooms from the loading dock?
Answer: The optics workshop is 400 feet walking distance from the loading dock.
b. Are there any space constraints to move the five optical tables to the destination rooms?
Answer: Yes, unfortunately the hallway is only 52 inches wide and the entrance to the workshop is only 38 inches wide, whereas the tables are between 58 and 60 inches wide. The Government is anticipating that the tabletops must be maneuvered in an orientation standing on their sides.
c. How wide are the doors?
Answer: The narrowest doorway is the entrance to the optics workshop, which is only 38 inches wide. The hallway in front of it is 114 inches wide, so it should be possible to orient each tabletop on its side on a dolly and angle it into the room.
Question 2 - Are the rooms same level as the loading dock?
Answer: Yes
Question 3 - Do the optical tables need to be moved through a freight elevator?
Answer: No
Question 4 - Do the optical tables need to be moved up/down the stairs?
Answer: No
Question 5 - Do you allow a visit to walk through the moving path from the loading dock to the destination rooms?
Answer: Yes. A site visit has been scheduled to take place on Friday, June 21, 2024, at 9:00 AM EDT at the Geospatial Research Lab, on the Humphreys Engineer Center compound at 7880 Leaf Rd, Alexandria, Virginia, 22315. The building is the Cude Building. Please see Attachment 2 - “Site Visit” document for additional information and required contractor information that must be submitted prior to the site visit.
At the current moment, the Government can provide a walk-through of most of the path leading all the way from the loading dock right up to the door entrance of the optics workshop.
Unfortunately, outside visitors cannot enter the workshop itself today because it is currently still a security-controlled area, but that will soon change. By mid-July it will be possible for the Government to bring outside visitors into the workshop. A 1:1 diagram of the optics workshop is included on slide 3 of Attachment 1 - “Table Install Route”.
Question 6 – Hallway is carpeted. What is the carpet tile thickness?
Answer: The carpet tiles have a 1/8 inch hard rubber backing and 1/8 inch thick pile. The flooring in the destination room, the optics workshop, will be epoxy-coated concrete.
Question 7 - The optical table top will be on its side and on a piano dolly. Can the tables on piano dolly be rolled directly on the carpet? Or do you need cement boards to be laid down on the carpeted floor so that the tables on piano dolly can be rolled on the board instead?
Answer: Yes, the dolly can be rolled directly on the carpet.
