REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION AND GOVERNMENT

RESPONSES

1. Can surface prep be other than SSPC SP-5 and utilize moisture cure paint system instead?

RESPONSE: No. Bid as shown in the Specifications. Since this location is submerged, vinyl paint is the most appropriate choice. Moisture-cure polyurethane paint is not appropriate in this application.

2. Can power tools to SSPC SP-11 be utilized instead of sandblasting?

RESPONSE: No. As per Spec Section 09 97 03 PAINTING OF EMBEDDED STEEL CHANNEL, Para 3.1.2, “Ferrous surfaces of the embedded steel channel shall be dry blast-cleaned to SSPC SP 5/NACE No. 1.” This is to achieve the appropriate profile on the steel element. Power tools would not produce the appropriate profile.

3. Can existing bolts be used instead of installing new bolts?

RESPONSE: No. Plan Sheet G-001 amended to show that the Contractor is to provide 100% of the new bolts, and the new anchor bolts. As for installation of the new bolts, bid as shown. Bid prices should include having all existing bolts cut off, and new bolts installed, as shown on Plan Sheet S-301.

4. Is the Government providing the bolts?

RESPONSE: No. Plan Sheet G-001 is not correct, and has been amended to show that the Contractor is to provide all of the new bolts, and all of the new anchor bolts. The term “Anchor Bolts” is used to describe the anchor bolts that hold the pre-existing rails to the C-Channels in the slots. New Anchor Bolts are required, along with new drilled holes through the C-Channel and into the concrete, to attach the new rails to the C- Channels. The term “Bolts” is used to describe the bolts that hold the plate steel onto the existing T-sections.
