“2.3.1.2 Stone Gradation
The following specific rock gradation is applicable to the construction of this project: Stone shall be obtained from one of the sources specified in Section 01100 GENERAL PROVISIONS entitled "STONE SOURCES" (attached at the end of Section 01100), and shall contain a combined total of not more than 10 percent of earth, sand, shale, and non-durable rock. It is preferable that the materials contain a large percentage of pieces as large as the thickness of the revetment structure will permit, with enough smaller pieces of various sizes to fill the larger voids (creating a dense in-place mass). The Contractor shall select a quarry and a geological rock unit (in accordance with the approved source list) that can and will consistently produce Gradation 1 and Gradation 2, as defined below, for the project. The riprap stone gradation required for the Channel Riprap shall be as provided below.

The large stones shall not be excessively elongated nor slabby, but shall be blocky or roughly rectangular in shape similar to the smaller stones within the overall rock mass. The aspect ratio (length along the longest axis divided by the length along the shortest axis) shall not be greater than 3. The same aspect ratio applies to the length to thickness measurement of the stone. The Riprap stone gradation required for the Shoofly per KCS standard specifications for construction Section 02274 Part 2.1 Random Rip-Rap and Standard Rip Rap as provided below.
