CSSC Dispersal Barrier, Permanent Barrier 1, Water Structures W912P6-13-B-0002 repaired by a blend of portland cement and white cement properly proportioned so that the final color when cured will be the same as adjacent concrete.

2.3.5.2 Major Defects

Major defects are those which involve more than 36 square inches of concrete or expose reinforcing steel. If one or more major defects appear in a member, it shall be rejected. Cracks of a width of more than0.01 inch shall be cause for rejection of the member.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

Prior to erection, and again after installation, precast members shall be checked for damage, such as cracking, spalling, and honeycombing. As directed by the Contracting Officer, precast members that do not meet the surface finish requirements specified in Part 2 in paragraph entitled "Surface Finish" shall be repaired, or removed and replaced with new precast prestressed members.

3.2 ERECTION

Precast concrete sleepers shall be lifted in accordance with the shop drawings and moved into position in the canal, guided by divers. Care shall be taken to orient the sleepers with the slots for the bundle of eight billets at the correct end. Sleepers shall align across the canal within 1/2-inch so that the electrodes will seat in the slots provided.

Sleepers shall be locally shimmed with adjacent loose bottom material or imported gravel so that the elevation to the top of sleepers measured at slots is 552.50 feet plus 0.08 feet minus zero. Material must be placed under the entire sleeper. Spacing of sleepers measured across the canal shall be within plus or minus 3 inches of the plan locations.

3.3 CONSTRUCTION RECORDS

Complete construction records shall be kept of the manufacturing, handling, and erection of the precast-prestressed concrete members. Records shall be kept for, but not limited to, the following items:

a. Specifications of material used in the manufacture of the members.

b. Time-temperature history of the concrete members from casting to the transfer of the prestress force.

c. Records of the tendon stressing operation including initial prestress force, measured elongation, how it was measured, and how the tendonswere stressed and destressed.

d. Records of inspection of the members before and after the prestress force is transferred to the members.

e. Records of the inspection of the members each time they are moved.

f. Records of any defects in the member and any corrective measures taken.

3.1 INSPECTION

Inspect the work, keep records of work performed, and ensure that electrical connections are installed as indicated in the drawings. All connections are subject to inspection by the Contracting Officer.

3.2 CONDUCT OF WORK

3.2.1 Interference with Coordination With Navigation

The Sanitary and Ship Canal provides passage for barges and other craft.

The Contractor shall schedule in-water work around such traffic. The U.S.

Coast Guard enforces a Regulated Navigation Area (RNA) in the vicinity of the existing electric fish barriers (33 C.F.R. § 165.92). The contractor must coordinate with the Coast Guard to obtain any variances from the RNA desired for construction of the project.

3.3 PREPARATION OF CANAL BOTTOM

All man-made materials shall be removed from the canal bottom in areas below and between all of the electrodes, parasitics, and sleepers.

At the locations of the precast concrete sleepers, the canal bottom shall be suitable for placement of the sleepers to within 0.05 feet of their specified top elevation. At other locations below the electrodes and parasitics, the bottom of the canal shall be graded to Elevation 550.00 plus 1 foot.

3.4 ATTACHMENT OF ELECTRICAL CABLES

Complete electrical cable attachments in the dry before placing the electrodes in the water. The connections are designed to be shielded from galvanic corrosion. All parts shall be assembled, the protective compound installed, and the connections sealed.

Where electrodes are bundled, the connections shall be placed on the top of the top layer of electrodes.

The bottom layer of electrodes shall be turned over so that the connections are on the bottom.

Tag all cables for identification.

Protect electrical cables and connections from damage during handling of the electrodes.

3.5 INSTALLATION OF ELECTRODES

Electrodes and their attached electrical cables shall be lifted, transported, and then placed underwater into the slots in the precast sleepers. This operation shall be carried out using divers in the water.

No aids for installation are allowed to be welded to the electrodes or drilled into the electrodes.

SECTION 41 00 01 Page 3

Electrodes are not fastened to the sleepers.

Straighten each installed electrode to within 0.5 inches of a straight line from end to end. Provided each electrode meets this tolerance, incidental gaps between stacked electrodes are acceptable.

Electrical cables from the far end on the electrodes shall be laid directly on the bottom of the canal. Care shall be taken to move such cables away from the sleepers to avoid placing subsequent electrodes on them.

The electrical cables shall be collected and coiled in preparation for pulling them up the lined boreholes.
