4. At the end of the presentation, Mr. Murphy opened the floor for questions. One question was asked, which will be included in the question and answer section of the amendment. He reiterated the dates and time of the physical site visits for Guntersville and Pickwick Locks before concluding the meeting. He also stated that the Power Point presentation would be provided via an amendment to the solicitation. The meeting ended at 10:30 a.m. Central Time.
Q & A
Gearbox Inspections at Guntersville and Pickwick Locks Questions and Answers Amendment 0001
1. Due to difficulty bringing materials in and out of the auxiliary lock; will it be acceptable to stage fluids on the lock wall overnight?
ANSWER: There is no specific wording in the contract that indicates that fluids must be removed from the lock wall every day. Materials and equipment can be staged on the lock walls but must be cleared before moving to another corner of the lock.
2. Can the environmentally friendly pressure washing fluid be washed down the drain when pressure washing the machinery area?
ANSWER: Pressure washing fluid is not acceptable in this environment. Use water only.
3. For clarification we are not inspecting any of the external pinions and bull gears?
ANSWER: Correct. External pinion and bull gear is not in scope
4. If metal is found in the gearbox what is the procedure?
ANSWER: If metal is found in the gearbox report the finding and recommend action based on type of metal found.
5. Is it known whether any of the old oil to be disposed of contains lead?
ANSWER: None of the existing oil is known to contain lead.
6. While on the site visit there were no oil filters on any of the gearboxes, can you confirm?
ANSWER: There are oil filters at Pickwick. The gearboxes at Guntersville do not have inline oil filters.
7. What is the temperature in January?
ANSWER: Grant AL temperatures average from high 20’s to high 40’s. Counce TN temperatures average from low 30’s to low 50’s.
8. It will be tough to record contact pattern because we will not be able to rotate the gearing.
Pictures will be able to show current contact pattern. Bore scope will allow us to see more of the gearing, but not the complete gear-set without rotating the gearing. Will this be acceptable?
ANSWER: If pictures clearly indicate contact patterns they will be acceptable
9. We cannot perform functional and operational test. We can observe equipment running. Will the equipment be allowed to run for testing after we are done?
ANSWER: Equipment will be allowed to run for testing after contractor has completed their work.
10. Can we use high quality digital photos instead of lift tapes? It may be difficult to get a good pull from the tape with the limited amount of space we have going in through the inspection covers.
ANSWER: If pictures clearly indicate contact patterns they will be acceptable.
