SECTION 260526 - GROUNDING
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and
Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes grounding of electrical systems and equipment. Extent of grounding work is indicated by Drawings and by requirements of this Section.
B. Provide grounding systems as required, and all materials and equipment, including ground rods, accessories and associated equipment, as indicated or specified.
C. Types of grounding conductors specified:
1. In Earth: Bare, unless otherwise specified.
2. For General Use Above Grade: Insulated, unless otherwise specified.
3. For General Use Below Grade: Insulated, unless otherwise specified.
4. In Conduit with Phase Conductors: Insulated.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

2.1 GROUND RODS
A. Copper-clad steel rods 3/4 inch (19.1 mm) in diameter, 10 ft (3.0 m) long.

2.2 GROUNDING CONDUCTORS
A. Bare Grounding Conductors: Stranded annealed copper.

2.3 GROUNDING BUS
A. Power Systems - General: Bare, annealed, tinned copper bar 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) thick by 2 inch
(50.8 mm) wide by 12 ft (3.7 m) length (field cut as required) with stand-off insulators. Stand-off insulators shall be 600 volt AC (minimum) rated, 1-1/2 inch (38.1 mm) face diameter, 2 inch
(50.8 mm) high with threaded inserts.

2.4 GROUNDING CONNECTIONS
A. Exothermic Welding Connection Materials:
1. Exothermic welding connections to be used outdoors shall be suitable for exposure to moisture or direct burial without degradation over the life time of the grounding system.
2. Exothermic welding connections to be made in finished buildings or confined spaces shall use the low smoke, low emission Cadweld Exolon process (or equal by approved manufacturer) which is metallurgically equal to the above connection.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 APPLICATION
A. Use only copper conductors for both insulated and bare grounding conductors in direct contact with earth, concrete, masonry, crushed stone, and similar materials.
B. In raceways, use insulated color coded green copper equipment grounding conductors.
C. Exothermic-Welded Connections: Use for connections to structural steel and for underground connections, except those at test wells.
D. Equipment Grounding Conductor Terminations: Use bolted pressure clamps.
E. Underground Grounding Conductors: Use bare copper conductor, #4/0 AWG (107.2 mm ) minimum.
Bury at least 24 inch (610 mm) below grade or bury 12 inch (305 mm) above duct bank when installed as part of the duct bank.

F. Secondary Neutral and Transformer Enclosure: Interconnect and connect to grounding conductor.
3.2 EQUIPMENT GROUNDING CONDUCTORS
A. Comply with NEC for types, sizes, and quantities of equipment grounding conductors, unless specific types, larger sizes, or more conductors than required by NEC are indicated.
B. Install code color green insulated equipment grounding conductors in all feeders and circuits.
C. Isolated Equipment Enclosure Circuits: For designated equipment supplied by a branch circuit or feeder, isolate equipment enclosure from supply raceway with a nonmetallic raceway fitting listed for the purpose. Install fitting where raceway enters enclosure, and install a separate equipment grounding conductor. Isolate equipment grounding conductor from raceway and from panelboard grounding terminals. Terminate at equipment grounding conductor terminal of the applicable derived system or service, unless otherwise indicated.
D. Nonmetallic Raceways: Install an equipment grounding conductor in nonmetallic raceways, unless they are designated for telephone or data cables.
3.3 INSTALLATION
A. Main Grounding System:
1. The maximum resistance of any one rod is not to exceed 10 ohms (to be tested before any connection to other equipment).
2. Overall grounding mat is not to exceed 5 ohms. This measurement is to be with no other connections to building steel and/or water system.
3. Below grade connections to be by Cadweld exothermic process.
B. Ground Rods: Install at least three rods spaced at least one-rod length from each other and located at least the same distance from other grounding electrodes, unless otherwise indicated on Drawings.
C. Drive ground rods until tops are 6 inch (152 mm) below finished floor or 24 inch (610 mm) below final grade, unless otherwise indicated.
D. Interconnect ground rods with grounding electrode conductors. Use exothermic welds, except at test wells and as otherwise indicated. Make connections without exposing steel or damaging copper coating.
E. Do not install copper ground rods and conductors in cinder fill or soil containing cinders. Protect ground cables subject to mechanical damage by rigid steel conduit and bond conductor to the conduit at each end.
F. Grounding Conductors:

1. Extend ground conductors from the ground system to all switchgear, transformers, unit substations, motor control centers, motor starter panels, panelboards, and control panel ground buses or ground bars.
2. Equipment rated above 480 volt AC or 600 amps shall be grounded by two independent ground conductors.
3. Route along shortest and straightest paths possible, unless otherwise indicated on Drawings.
4. Avoid obstructing access or placing conductors where they may be subjected to strain, impact, or damage.
5. Provide protection for ground conductors subject to physical damage or abuse. Where metallic conduit is used for physical protection of a ground conductor, the conductor shall be bonded to the conduit at both ends.
G. Bonding Straps and Jumpers: Install so vibration by equipment mounted on vibration isolation hangers and supports is not transmitted to rigidly mounted equipment. Use exothermic-welded connectors for outdoor locations, unless a disconnect type connection is required; then, use a bolted clamp. Bond straps directly to the basic structure taking care not to penetrate any adjacent parts. Install straps only in locations accessible for maintenance.
H. Ufer Ground (Concrete-Encased Grounding Electrode): Fabricate according to NEC using a minimum of 20 ft (6.1 m) of bare copper conductor not smaller than #4/0 AWG (107.2 mm ). If concrete foundation is less than 20 ft (6.1 m) long, coil excess conductor within the base of the foundation.
Bond grounding conductor to reinforcing steel in at least four locations and to anchor bolts. Extend grounding conductor below grade and connect to building grounding grid or to a grounding electrode external to concrete.
I. Equipment Enclosures: The enclosures of all switchgear, transformers, unit substations, motor controls, and panelboards shall be grounded by a separate grounding conductor to the ground system.
J. Power Cable Shields: The shields of shielded power cables shall be grounded at both ends. The shields of shielded power cables spliced in the cable vault shall also be grounded in the cable vault.
3.4 CONNECTIONS
A. General: Make connections so galvanic action or electrolysis possibility is minimized. Select connectors, connection hardware, conductors, and connection methods so metals in direct contact will be galvanically compatible.
1. Use electroplated or hot-tin-coated materials to ensure high conductivity and to make contact points closer to order of galvanic series.
2. Make connections with clean, bare metal at points of contact.
3. Make aluminum-to-steel connections with stainless-steel separators and mechanical clamps.
4. Make aluminum-to-galvanized steel connections with tin-plated copper jumpers and mechanical clamps.
5. Coat and seal connections having dissimilar metals with inert material to prevent future penetration of moisture to contact surfaces.

6. Thoroughly clean all bonding surfaces of non-conducting materials. Tin and sweat contact surfaces while bolting. Do not use solder type connections.
B. Exothermic-Welded Connections: Comply with manufacturer’s written instructions. Welds that are puffed up or that show convex surfaces indicating improper cleaning are not acceptable.
C. Equipment Grounding Conductor Terminations: For #8 AWG (8.367 mm ) and larger, use pressure-type grounding lugs. For #10 AWG (5.261 mm ) and smaller grounding conductors may be terminated with winged pressure-type connectors.
D. Noncontact Metal Raceway Terminations: If metallic raceways terminate at metal housings without mechanical and electrical connection to housing, terminate each conduit with a grounding bushing.
Connect grounding bushings with a bare grounding conductor to grounding bus or terminal in housing.
Bond electrically non-continuous conduits at entrances and exits with grounding bushings and bare grounding conductors, unless otherwise indicated.
E. Tighten screws and bolts for grounding and bonding connectors and terminals according to manufacturer’s published torque-tightening values. If manufacturer’s torque values are not indicated, use those specified in UL 486A.
F. Compression-Type Connections: Use hydraulic compression tools to provide correct circumferential pressure for compression connectors. Use tools and dies recommended by connector manufacturer.
Provide embossing die code or other standard method to make a visible indication that a connector has been adequately compressed on grounding conductor.
G. Moisture Protection: If insulated grounding conductors are connected to ground rods or grounding buses, insulate entire area of connection and seal against moisture penetration of insulation and cable.
3.5 UNDERGROUND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM GROUNDING
A. Duct Banks: Install a grounding conductor in duct banks. Conductor shall be sized as indicated on
Drawings, but in no case for over 600 volt AC systems shall the cable be less than #4/0 AWG
(107.2 mm ) copper.
B. Manholes and Handholes: Install a driven ground rod close to wall and set rod depth so 4 inch
(102 mm) will extend above finished floor. If necessary, install ground rod before manhole is placed and provide a No. 4/0 AWG (107.2 mm ) bare copper conductor from ground rod into manhole through a waterproof sleeve in manhole wall. Protect ground rods passing through concrete floor with a double wrapping of pressure-sensitive tape or heat-shrunk insulating sleeve from 2 inch (50.8 mm) above to 12 inch (305 mm) below concrete. Seal floor opening with waterproof, non-shrink grout.
C. Connections to Manhole and Handhole Components: Connect exposed-metal parts such as inserts, cable racks, pulling irons, ladders, and cable shields within each manhole, to ground rod or grounding conductor. Make connections with #4/0 AWG (107.2 mm ) minimum, stranded, hard-drawn copper

conductor. Train conductors level or plumb around corners and fasten to manhole walls. Connect to cable armor and cable shields as recommended by manufacturer of splicing and termination kits.
D. Pad-Mounted Transformers and Switches: Install two ground rods and counterpoise circling pad, unless otherwise indicated on Drawings. Ground pad-mounted equipment and noncurrent-carrying metal items associated with substations and service entrance equipment by connecting them to underground cable and grounding electrodes. Use bare copper conductor not less than #4/0 AWG
(107.2 mm ) for counterpoise and for taps to equipment ground pad. Bury counterpoise not less than
18 inch (457 mm) below grade and 6 inch (152 mm) from the foundation.
3.6 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Grounding system shall meet the testing requirements as specified in Section 267000, “Electrical
Systems Testing”.
3.7 GRADING AND PLANTING
A. Restore surface features, including vegetation, at areas disturbed by Work of this Section. Re-establish original grades, unless otherwise indicated. If sod has been removed, replace it as soon as possible after backfilling is completed. Restore areas disturbed by trenching, storing of dirt, cable laying, and other activities to their original condition. Include application of topsoil, fertilizer, lime, seed, sod, sprig, and mulch. Comply with applicable Sections of Division 31 and 32. Maintain restored surfaces.
Restore disturbed paving as indicated.

Designate components and accessories, including clamps, brackets, hanger rods, splice-plates connectors, connectors, expansion-joint assemblies, straight lengths, horizontal bends, vertical bends, tees, crosses, reducers, and drop outs.
2. For each type of floor box provide the following: Provide installation details of floor box, locations and sizes of conduit entries, and associated components.

1.8 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate layout and installation of conduits, outlet boxes, pull boxes, floor boxes, wireways, and cable trays with other construction elements to ensure adequate headroom, working clearance, access, and slab thickness.

A. Manufacturer shall warranty equipment to be free from defects in material and workmanship for one
(1) year from date of Owner’s acceptance.
B. Installation contractor shall warranty installation to be free from defects in material and workmanship for one (1) year from date of Owner’s acceptance.

3.1 WIRING METHODS

3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Conduit - General:
1. Install conduit sizes as indicated. Where conduit sizes are not indicated, install sizes per NEC requirements, except do not use conduit sizes smaller than 3/4 inch (21 mm), unless otherwise specified. Use 1/2 inch (16 mm) fixture stems optionally, unless otherwise indicated.
2. All conduits to be installed parallel to or at right angle to walls and in an orderly manner.
3. Where conduit joints occur in concrete slabs, damp or wet locations or exposed to weather, make the joints watertight by applying a coating of thread lubricant to the entire conduit thread area before assembling. Use special care to insure that such joints are tight mechanically and that the lubricant application completely seals them against the entrance of moisture. Coat all field cut threads with thread lubricant.
4. For on-site cutting and threading, cut conduit square. Cut threads clean and true using proper size dies for conduit type being threaded. Thoroughly clean and ream all inside edges of the conduit to remove all burrs or sharp edges.
5. Where inside protective coating has been destroyed by the above operations, apply a suitable protective coating.
6. Conceal all conduits in finished areas either above ceilings or walls. Conduit shall not be installed in floors or in slabs on grade, unless otherwise specified or as indicated on the
Drawings.
7. Install conduit in mechanical rooms and similar spaces exposed, unless otherwise specified or indicated.
8. Deliver conduit to the project site in not less than 10 ft (3.0 m) lengths with each length of conduit having approved stamp of Underwriters Laboratory and manufacturer’s name and trademark.
9. Mechanically join together metal conduit, fittings, enclosures and raceways for conductors to form a continuous electrical conductor, and to provide effective electrical continuity and firm mechanical assembly.
10. Secure conduit in place by two locknuts and terminate with a bushing when conduit entering sheet metal enclosure and outlet boxes and not terminated in a threaded hub.
11. Clean conduit thoroughly and dry inner surfaces before conductors are installed. Remove and replace conduit found to be plugged or so exceptionally dirty that they cannot be satisfactorily cleaned. Install an approved type of conduit cap or plug on conduit installed for future use or

use by other trades. Cap or plug and properly identify with metal tags empty conduit installed for future use.
12. Install pull boxes at least every 100 ft (30.5 m) in long conduit runs.
13. Complete installation of electrical raceways before starting installation of conductors within raceways.
14. Prevent foreign matter from entering raceways by using temporary closure protection.
15. Protect stub-ups from damage where conduits rise from floor slabs. Arrange so curved portion of bends is not visible above the finished slab.
16. Make bends and offsets so the inside diameter is not effectively reduced.
17. Install no more than the equivalent of three (3) 90 degree bends in any conduit run before providing an appropriately sized pull box.
B. Fittings:
1. Use only compression type fittings on EMT conduit. Set screw fittings are not permitted.
2. Cast body fitting are not permitted.
3. Install fittings compatible with conduit and suitable for use and location.
4. Join conduit system with fittings designed and approved for the purpose to make joints tight.
C. Expansion Fittings:
1. Install a conduit expansion fitting in each conduit run wherever it crosses an expansion joint in the structure to which it is attached. In addition, install an expansion fitting in each conduit run which is mechanically attached to separate structures. Install a bonding jumper or ground clamp to connect the conduits.
D. Bushings:
1. Install insulating bushings on conduit ends before the installation of any conductors.
2. Grounding bushings shall be installed on all flexible conduit at connections to boxes and/or equipment. They shall be installed where isolation of ground is required, such as at audio equipment feeds. Grounding bushings shall be installed on all metallic conduit where bare ground wires or cables are run.
E. Flexible Connections:
1. Use maximum of 6 ft (1.8 m) of flexible conduit for service to individual recessed fixtures, 1/2 inch (16 mm) minimum size, and for final connection to distribution transformers, motors and other equipment subject to vibration or movement. Install the flexible metallic conduit so that liquids will tend to run off the surface instead of draining toward the fitting.
F. Stub-Up Connections:
1. Extend conduits through concrete floor for connection to freestanding equipment. Install with an adjustable type of coupling threaded inside for plugs and set flush with the finished floor.

6 inch (152 mm) above the equipment pad or floor. Install screwdriver-operated, threaded flush plugs flush with the equipment pad or floor for future equipment connections.

G. Concealed Conduit:
1. Install concealed conduit and extensions from exposed conduit systems neatly parallel with or at right angles to the walls of the building.
2. Install conduit so as not to damage or run through structural members. Install sleeves where conduit runs through structural walls. Refer to Section 260500, “General Requirements, Electrical Work” for Cutting and Patching.
3. Avoid horizontal or cross runs in building type partitions or side walls.
H. Exposed Conduit:
1. Install exposed conduit and extensions from concealed conduit systems neatly parallel with or at right angles to the walls of the building.
2. Install exposed conduit work so as not to interfere with ceiling inserts, ceiling lights or ventilation outlets.
I. Sleeves:
1. Install sleeves as noted. Where conduits are to pass through floor slabs, and conduit slots are not provided, install rigid steel conduit sleeves of size as required for conduit or as indicated, and securely fasten in the concrete forms to avoid damage or movement of the sleeve at any time.
2. Install rigid steel conduit sleeves with bottom of sleeves flush with slab and top 3 inch
(76.2 mm) above finished floor.
3. Close and make watertight all open spaces around installed conduit with oakum and approved mastic. Support conduit at each level. Seal unused pipe sleeves. Provide approved mastic for fire stop and/or fire rated wall/floor penetration system at all floor and wall penetrations.
J. Pull Rope:
1. Install monofilament plastic line having a tensile strength of not less than 200 lbs (90 kg) with wooden blocks fastened to both ends in all empty electrical and telephone conduits. Leave at least 12 inch (305 mm) of slack at each end of pull rope.
K. Pull and Junction Boxes:
1. For junction or pull boxes not over 100 cubic inch (1639 cubic centimeter) in size use 4-
11/16 inch (119.5 mm) x 4-11/16 inch (119.5 mm) outlet boxes. For junction or pull boxes over 100 cubic inch (1639 cubic centimeter) in size construct same as cabinets with covers of same gauge metal as boxes and secure by screws or bolts. Use galvanized sheet steel boxes with metal thickness not less than No. 14 gauge. Size and install boxes per the latest edition of

1.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. General: Refer to applicable Sections of Division 31 for definition of materials, description of testing services, and requirements for excavation, filling, compaction, and other applicable requirements.
B. Preparation: Start pavement removal with minimum 1-1/2 inch (38.1 mm) deep saw cut to provide neat straight lines.
C. Conduit and Manhole Drain Pipe Bedding and Backfilling:
1. Backfill and compact with materials and methods in accordance with applicable Sections of
Division 31.
2. Exercise special care in compacting first layer of backfill over electrical duct lines.
D. Excavation: Perform all excavation in accordance with applicable Sections of Division 31.
E. Restoring Surfaces:
1. Restore street pavements, curbs, and sidewalks that have been opened in performance of the
