1.2 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this project is to renovate existing Edgren High School Buildings 742, 746, and 747 at Misawa AB, Japan. The program calls for the renovation of 7,372 SM (79,359 SF) to serve 400 students in accordance with DoDEA's requirements.

The existing single-story high school is Type II-B standard reinforced concrete construction with steel roof framing and standard seam metal roofs. A new, enclosed utility yard attached to one of the buildings will house major mechanical and electrical equipment. Renovation of the school's parking lot, bus loading area, and accessible site improvements will also be included.

The buildings and site will be made to comply with the installation's AT and security requirements, including proper standoff distances from roadways, parking lots, and trash enclosures. Clear sight lines to building interiors, reduction of exterior hidden spaces will be provided to facilitate campus security.

The renovated facilities will be designed in accordance with DoDEA 21st Century Education Facilities Specifications where practical, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Accessibility Guidelines / Architectural Barriers Act (ABA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Life Safety Code, Standards of Seismic Safety For Federally Owned Buildings, and energy and water conservation standards. Japan environmental governing standards will be followed during the site removal and restoration.

The buildings will be sprinklered to meet NFPA requirements for new education facilities. Fire protection and life safety systems will be

SECTION 01 11 00.00 10 Page 2 designed to comply with the combined requirements of the UFC, NFPA, and IBC. The capacity of the existing water system was confirmed to have sufficient pressure to support the fire sprinkler system.

The project includes related renovation of infrastructure such as utilities to include heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems equipment; electrical; plumbing and fixtures; fire suppression; fire alarms; communications; parking areas; lighting; floor coverings; ceilings and audio-visual systems. The project will include selective demolition of interior walls and finishes. The project also will not require demolition of any buildings.

Sustainable principles will be maximized in the design, development and construction of the project in accordance with Executive Order 13693 and other applicable laws and executive orders. Energy conservation and environmentally safe measures will be incorporated in this project wherever feasible, practical or required by regulation.
