GEOTECHNICAL DATA REPORT
1 SCOPE
The information provided in this section encompasses the geotechnical field investigations available for this project. The investigations consist of borings (core, hand auger, and piezometer). The associated boring logs and laboratory data are presented in paragraphs 5.5 and 5.6, respectively. A character of materials paragraph is included to provide a comprehensive description of the materials utilizing both recent and historical knowledge of the project area. Also included in this section are definitions of terms and boring log notes, which provide additional explanation of the boring logs and drilling techniques.
Items discussed in the character of materials paragraph may not appear explicitly on the boring logs. Based on historic knowledge of the project area, the character of materials paragraph includes items that supplement the data documented by the boring logs. When reviewing the boring logs, use all of the data on the logs, including the materials description, legend, and blow counts. When evaluating the subsurface conditions, use all of the data, including the character of materials paragraph and boring logs.
During the solicitation period, any questions that pertain to the information provided in this section should be addressed to the contract specialist identified in Block 9 of SF1442. After contract award, questions should be addressed to the appointed ACO/COR, which will coordinate with Geotechnical Branch.
2 PROJECT BACKGROUND
As part of the Kissimmee River Restoration Program, a new U-shaped weir (identified as S-69) has been recommended for construction on an existing stretch of the Kissimmee River (also known as Canal 38) located in Okeechobee County. The specific features of the Kissimmee River S-69 project include the construction of a U-shaped weir structure. The structure is to be designed to provide local drainage control during flood events by managing spillage of the overflow into a stretch of the existing Kissimmee River. Upstream portions of the Kissimmee River are to be backfilled under a separate contract.
3 CHARACTER OF MATERIALS
3.1 REGIONAL GEOLOGY
Recent deposits (present to 0.126 million years ago) include dune sands, peat, and alluvium. The dune deposits, primarily located near larger lakes, are composed on white, medium to coarse grained quartz sands with small amounts of organic material. In general, the dune sands lie above the water table. The peat deposits are primarily found in marshes and swampy areas and typically range from 3 to 8 feet in thickness. Alluvium deposits are located within the flood plain system of the Kissimmee River. The sediments primarily consist of fine to medium grained quartz sands with some organic material. The alluvial sediments are often calcareous and can attain thicknesses of up to 20 feet in the area.
Deposits of Pleistocene age (0.126 to 2.5 million years ago) reflect changes in global sea level due to glacial cycles. Land was alternately exposed or submerged by sea level fluctuation during these cycles. During each subsequent glacial cycle, smaller portions of land were submerged with each succeeding advance of sea water. The northwest-southeast trending Highland Ridge, located approximately 15 miles west of the Kissimmee River, separated deeper waters to the east
Kissimmee River Restoration Project S-69 Weir and Channel Backfill
00 31 32 - 3 and shallower waters to the west. The sediments deposited during the Pleistocene consist primarily of medium to coarse, quartz sand.
Pliocene age (2.5 to 5.3 million years ago) sediments of the Tamiami Formation underlie the Pleistocene sediments in the area. Composed primarily of clayey, sandy, shell marl, quartz sands, phosphatic sands, and sandy clay, the formation is approximately 100 feet thick in the vicinity of the Kissimmee River.
The Miocene age (5.3 to 23 million years ago) Hawthorn Group lies unconformably below the Tamiami Formation. Although the bulk of the Hawthorn Group is documented as Miocene in age, the uppermost section of is considered to be post-Miocene in age. The sediments of the Hawthorn Group are typically dark green to white, montmorillonitic clay, white to cream, dense sandy phosphatic limestone, fine to coarse sand size quartz, fine to coarse gravel sized phosphate, and phosphatic clays. Generally, the prevalence of carbonate units within the Hawthorn Group increases with depth. In the vicinity of the Kissimmee River, the top of the Hawthorn Group is encountered at depths ranging from approximately 85 to 100 feet below ground surface (BGS). The unit is approximately 350 to 400 feet thick in the project area.
3.2 THE LOCAL GEOLOGY
Structure S-69 is situated on the Kissimmee River on the border of Okeechobee County and Highlands County and in the Eastern Flatlands physiographic region. The Kissimmee River lies within a flood plain which is up to 3 miles wide in some areas. Sediments in the area are from Recent to Miocene (present to 23 mya) in age. The Recent age sediments found in the study area consist of sand, peat, and alluvial deposits. These occur at land surface and extend to a maximum depth of 20 feet in the vicinity of S-69. The underlying Pleistocene age (0.126 to 2.5 mya) sediments are undifferentiated deposits, described as fine to medium-grained quartz sand with clay and some shell. Pleistocene sediments may be found at the land surface and extend to an approximate depth of 60 feet.
3.3 MATERIALS ENCOUNTERED
Material on the east and west banks of the Kissimmee River are spoils from the excavation of the canal as part of the Kissimmee River Flood Control project of the 1960s. Spoil material present on the east bank of the river and flood plain range in thickness from not present to 5 feet. The spoil material on the west bank of the river creates an embankment with elevations of approximately 49 feet NAVD 88 along the river bank and gently sloping to the west to pre-channelization Kissimmee River elevations of approximately 25 feet NAVD 88. The spoil material is comprised of silty, poorly graded, fine-grained quartz sand with trace amounts of shell and organic material. Underlying the spoils is interbedded soft to dense organic and inorganic silt, sandy silt, and lean clay to approximately 29 feet below grade. A layer of dense, silty, fine- to medium- grained quartz sand with trace to few amounts of fine to gravel sized shell is encountered beneath the silts, sandy silts, and lean clay interval. This layer extends to approximately 39 feet below ground surface.
Underlying the dense, silty, fine- to medium-grained quartz sand is loose silty fine- to medium-grained sand. Lenses of shell occur locally and are up to 5-feet thick.
Shallow sediments within the river are composed primarily of silt and silty sands to a depth of approximately 1.5 to 5 feet. Black, organic material was present in most of the shallow sediment layers. Underlying the shallow sediments, an interval of loose, silty, fine grained quartz sand is present. The silty sand interval, which also includes some fine grained, sand size shell, ranges from approximately 10 to 30 feet in thickness. Clayey sands are present beneath the silty sand layer extending to a depth of approximately 65 to 67 feet. The clayey sands consist primarily of fine grained, quartz sands with little to some clay. Fine to coarse gravel size, shell is present within the clayey sand unit ranging from trace to some with diameters up to 1.5-inches noted.
S-69 Weir and Channel Backfill
00 31 32 - 4
Recent field investigations were conducted in 2002, 2003, 2010, and 2016 in both the wet and dry seasons. The water table was encountered at depths ranging from approximately ground surface to 3.5 feet.

5.3 BORING LOG NOTES
Borings CP10-KRRS69-CB-01 through CP10-KRRS69-CB-18, CP10-KRRS69-PZ-01 through CP10-KRRS69-PZ-03, and CB-03-KRWD-01 through CB-03-KRWD-10 were driven using the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) procedure with a 140 pound hammer with a 30-inch drop using a
2.0 foot split spoon (1 3/8-inch I.D. and 2-inch O.D.). Borings were advanced in 18-inch intervals, or until refusal was encountered. Refusal is defined as a total of 50 blows of the hammer within any 6-inch increment, a total of 100 blows within any 1-foot increment, or no observed advance of the sampler after 10 successive blows of the hammer. When refusal was encountered, the borings were continued with a 4-inch by 5 1/2-inch diameter core barrel until the rate of penetration indicated softer material, at which point the SPT procedure was resumed.
Borings CP10-KRRS69-AB-01 through CP10-KRRS69-AB-06 were drilled with hollow stem augers. Borings CP16-KRRS69-HA-01 through CP16-KRRS69-HA-19 were drilled with a hand auger.
