CHIEF JOSEPH DAM

OVERVIEW OF

FREIGHT AND PASSENGER

ELEVATOR REPLACEMENT

Date: Wednesday, 3 May 2023

Mtg Location: CHIEF JOSEPH DAM

POWERHOUSE PASSENGER ELEVATOR

REPLACEMENT

PASSENGER ELEVATOR | PROJECT DESCRIPTION

History The initial project for the powerhouse passenger elevator was constructed with the dam and dates back to 1955. It was rehabilitated in 2003. The elevator was originally constructed by Otis Elevator company and the elevator mechanical and control systems were last rehabilitated in 2003 by Armstrong Elevator company.

Project overview Chief Joseph Dam’s powerhouse passenger elevator outages regularly impact the daily work and safety of personnel in the powerhouse. The passenger elevator moves personnel to all elevation levels of the powerhouse at CJD. Dam workers and visitors are forced to use the stairs to access any powerhouse elevation during outages.

PASSENGER ELEVATOR | OVERVIEW

It is the only elevator servicing the powerhouse and is getting a lot of traffic.

The main access floor is at level 4 elevation 810.00.

Servicing 6 floors with front and rear access doors at level 2,4,5, and 6.

The powerhouse passenger elevator travel distance is 78 feet.

FREIGHT ELEVATOR | PROJECT DESCRIPTION

History The freight elevator was installed after the additional units were put in service at Chief Joseph Dam in the 1980s. The elevator was installed by US Elevator Corp and has not been rehabilitated. It has experienced operational issues and break downs which necessitated it being taken out of service for months at a time for maintenance. The elevator structure consists of a large, 48” square concrete column bearing on the walls and grade below.

Project overview Chief Joseph Dam’s freight elevator is currently experiencing operational issues that regularly impact the daily work and safety of personnel in the powerhouse. The freight elevator is used daily to transport mechanic’s toolboxes and electric carts which are driven onto the freight elevator accompanied by their operator from the station service switchgear floor (elevation 785) up to the main floor (elevation 810) of the powerhouse. Without use of the freight elevator, dam personnel must either hand carry the smaller load items or must use the bridge crane to move those loads, both of which impact the safety of personnel, operational readiness, and operational capability of project personnel due to lost work hours.

FREIGHT ELEVATOR | OVERVIEW

CONSTRAINTS:

The existing structure consists of a reinforced concrete column and enclosure walls.

Access to the sump pit is confined.

The concrete column has a steel sleeve installed that houses a hydraulic plunger.

The concrete walls were installed between floors on Elevation 785 and 810. The top of the elevator has a concrete wall and steel framed paneling roof system.

OPPORTUNITIES:

The elevator support structure has a steel framed roof/wall at the top level (Elevation 810) that can be disassembled, giving access to the sump and elevator plunger/jack for removal/replacement.

The elevator cab and support framing can be disassembled.

FREIGHT ELEVATOR | ELEVATOR BASE SUPPORT

Existing freight elevator cab is lifted via a 6” plunger diameter by 1/4” thick steel within a 16” diameter pipe.

The plunger and support framing bears on the concrete support and is located within an embedded steel sleave.

This plunger, or jack, presses on a steel plate and channel framing cab, which is guided by rails placed along the concrete walls. PLUNGER AND SUMP PIT

SUPPORT COLUMN

FREIGHT ELEVATOR | CAB FRAMING

The plunger pushes on a steel plate which supports two 8-inch channels.

The 8-inch channels support 4-inch framing that makes up the elevator cab floor (diamond plating).

The elevator cab walls around the perimeter 4-inch channels.

OPPORTUNITIES:

The existing steel framing is adequate to support an increased loading with minimal to no modifications depending on the disassembly and reassembly.

The framing can be replaced to accommodate any cab, or easily re-welded.
