2.5.6.2 Quoin and Miter Bearing Forgings

Quoin and miter bearing forgings shall be of forged steel conforming to ASTM A668/A668M, Class D. Provide bearing castings with greased adjusting bolts as shown. Adjust miter bearings along the entire gate height when the gate is swung in miter position. Adjust quoin bearings for a continuous gap, provided by the Contracting Officer, along the entire gate height when the gate is swung in miter position. The approximate magnitude of the quoin bearing gap is 0.010 inch (10 thousandths). Set the bearings with an approved epoxy material as shown on Drawing sheet S-503.

2.5.6.3 Greased Pintle Assembly

Greased pintle assembly shall consist of pintle socket as shown. Pintle socket shall be of forged steel. Pintle socket shall be press-fitted with an aluminum bronze bushing with bearing surfaces finished truly hemispherical. Bolt holes for attaching pintle socket to gate leaf shall be drilled and reamed after the pintle socket is assembled with gate leaf.

Pintle socket shall be connected to the bottom of the lower girder web of the gate leaf with steel bolts. The pintle bases and tolerances shall be as shown and described in the drawings notes. The pintle bearings areas on the pintle bases shall be set at elevations -3.25 and -17.25 for upper and lower gates, respectively, to within 0.001 foot during placement of concrete, and prior to erection of the gates. Allow concrete to set for 7 days after placement before erecting the gates.

2.5.6.4 Seal Assemblies

Seal assemblies shall consist of rubber seals, steel retainer and spacer bars, and fasteners. Rubber seals shall be continuous over the full length. Seals shall be accurately fitted and drilled for proper installation. Bolt holes shall be drilled in the rubber seals by using prepared templates or the retainer bars as templates. Splices in seals shall be fully molded, develop a minimum tensile strength of 50 percent of the unspliced seal, and occur only at locations shown. All vulcanizing of splices shall be done in the shop. The vulcanized splices between molded corners and straight lengths shall be located as close to the corners as practicable. The surfaces of finished splices shall be smooth and free of irregularities.

2.5.6.5 Top Anchorages

Top anchorages shall be accurately set and blocked rigidly in their correct location directly over the centers of the pintles. The horizontal anchorage arms and the anchor bars shall be absolutely level. When the gudgeon pins are inserted, the quoin posts shall be plumb and the gate leaves shall swing horizontally throughout the entire travel.

2.5.6.6 Embedded Wall Quoin Finishing

Prior to final installation of the new miter gates, the wall quoins shall be surveyed and finished for straightness tolerance within 1/8 inch along the entire height of the wall quoin contact surface. Submit a wall quoin finishing plan as described on Drawing sheet S-734 that complies with the following criteria:

a. Surface Preparation and Finish Application of Wall Quoins: Immediately prior to application of the finish surface material, the wall quoin contact surface shall be prepared to receive the surface finish product
