PART I – THE SCHEDULE – SECTION C

DESCRIPTION/SPECIFICATION/WORK STATEMENT

C000 GENERAL

C001 PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Marine Design Center (MDC) of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has issued this solicitation to acquire a new barge and integrate a Government furnished automated robotics system onto the barge, resulting in a barge with automated mat-laying capabilities. The completed vessel will replace the aging Mat Sinking Unit - “Mat Boat” barge belonging to the Vicksburg District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and will be used by the District to support the revetment mission on the Mississippi River. The new barge will be named “Armor One”.

Rendering of New Mat Sinking Unit barge – “Armor One”

The robotics system equipment will be provided by the Government as Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) to the shipyard for integration and installation on the barge. The GFE robotics system is assumed to include the following major systems:

• Overhead Gantry crane systems

• Automated Tying Gantry System

• Traction Winch Systems

• Driven Wheel Mat Conveyance Systems

• Launch wire clamping & cutting systems

• Robotic system sensors & cameras

• Mooring Winch Control System

• Control House Control Consoles

• Robotics Central Control Hub (CCH)

When complete, the new mat boat will be capable of performing automated mat-laying.

The completed vessel will be ABS Classed.

As information, a description of the intended robotics systems operation is below:

1) The Mat Boat (Armor One) is positioned along the shore in a location where mats are required to be placed. 36 launch cables which are controlled by traction winches in the hull are routed down the mat deck and onto the shore where they are anchored.

2) A supply barge with concrete mats is moored into position parallel to the mat boat on the port side. Six automated overhead gantry cranes (“Placement Arms”) on the Armor One lift the concrete mats off of the supply barge and place them on the Armor One mat deck. The cranes have various ranges of motion and can be stowed within the footprint of the barge. The cranes have winches that hoist custom made lifting frames. The lifting frames incorporate various pneumatic systems for aligning to and lifting the concrete mats.

3) Once the mats are placed on the mat deck, driven conveyor wheels on the mat deck will move and align the different rows of mats such that the “scarf box” areas of the concrete mats align. Once the scarf boxes are aligned, the automated tying gantry, which spans the entire length of the mat deck, will tie the rows of mats to the launch cables. During tying, the entire automated tying gantry is slowly moving up the mat deck. Moreover, the individual tying modules on the gantry have additional ranges of motion for tying. In order to tie the mats to the launch cables, the tying gantry plunges automated tying guns into the scarf boxes. The automated tie guns tie the metal wires that are embedded in the concrete mats to the launch cable. The alignment and tying of mats relies on various robotic sensors and cameras on the tying gantry.

4. Once the mats are tied together, the mat boat (Armor One) lays the mats over the starboard side of the barge. Once an area of mat has been laid, the mat boat is hauled away from the shore via mooring winches on the mat boat itself and the process continues.

5. When the completed mat is ready to be released into the water, the wire clamping and cutting assemblies will deploy and cut the 36 launch cables.

6. In general, the above systems are automated and controlled by the robotics central control hub and the robotics control consoles. The Mat Deck also includes a human only zone where workers can walk and make manual ties where the robotics systems missed ties. These workers carry manual tie guns custom made for the mat tying operation.
