| STEP/MEASURE | GO NO-GO | N/A |
+* 1. Element leader selects the decontamination site according to the mission, terrain, troops, time available, and civil considerations (METT-TC).
a. Establishes the decontamination site upwind in the cold zone
b. Selects the decontamination site based on the prevailing weather conditions.
c. Designates the entry point at the beginning of the decontamination corridor.
d. Defines decontaminant and method of decontamination.
+* 2. Element leader selects either wet or dry decontamination procedures based on the agent, hazard, and weather.
3. Decontamination element establishes, maintains and monitors communications with operations section and unit personnel entering the hot zone.
+ 4. Element establishes the technical decontamination lane
a. Sets up the decontamination site to decontaminate personnel, equipment, and non-ambulatory or injured personnel.
b. Establishes the technical emergency decontamination lane.
Note: Decontamination procedures may differ depending on the circumstances and hazards at the scene. Dry decontamination such as brushing or scraping, is an appropriate alternative for other contamination removal. Other considerations such as the hazard's reactivity with water and its solubility are factors in determining the appropriate decontamination method
c. Establishes the decontamination site sequential actions.
Note: The number of stations required for technical decontamination will vary depending on the factors such as type of agent and the weather. Personal clothing removal, shower and redress may be unnecessary if contamination did not penetrate the protective clothing. Monitoring equipment should be used to verify if any contamination has penetrated the protective suit.
(1) Station 1 - Equipment drop
(2) Station 2 - PPE decontamination.
(3) Station 3 - monitoring point.
Note: Whenever possible ensure the use of redundant detection equipment
(4) Station 4 - protective clothing removal.
(5) Station 5 - clothing and respirator removal.
(6) Station 6 - shower and redress.
(7) Station 7 - Medical evaluation.
+* 5. Element leader adjusts and maintains the decontamination site based on:
a. Reactivity hazards.
b. Environmental conditions.
c. Safety.
d. Waste management/runoff.
e. Additional resources
f. Incident commander, unit commander, or safety officer guidance.
6. Decontamination/entry team personnel performs decontamination of sample container.
+ 7. Element maintains positive control of the samples through the decontamination line.
+ 8. Decontamination element performs decontamination of personnel and equipment.
a. Removes gross contamination
b. Avoids the spread of contamination through the decontamination line.
c. Verifies the completeness of the decontamination and redirects personnel as required.
Note: Whenever possible ensure the use of redundant detection equipment.
d. Containerizes the entry suits and label with name, date, and location information.
e. Utilizes emergency decontamination if required. A basic set of emergency decontamination procedures is as follows:
Note: When the emergency decontamination lane requires activation, normal decontamination operations will stop until the situation is mitigate Normal operations resume once the casualty has been safely processed through the emergency decontamination lane. WMD-CST missions do not necessarily stop for emergency decontamination operations.
(1) Removes the casualty from the contaminated area.
(2) Washes immediately any exposed body parts with water.
Note: Only required if deemed necessary due to suit breach or contaminated skin.
(3) Removes casualty's clothing and/or PPE. If possible, cutting from the top down in a manner that minimizes the spread of contamination.
(4) Performs a quick cycle of head-to-toe wash, and rinse.
(5) Transfers the casualty to treatment personnel for assessment, first aid, and medical treatment
(6) Ensures that ambulance and hospital personnel are notified on the contamination involved and appropriate PPE required.
* 9. Element leader terminates the decontamination operation.
a. Requests permission to terminate the decontamination operation.
b. Receives permission and began terminating decontamination operations
c. Decontaminates recoverable equipment.
d. Centralizes, packages, marks, and labels hazardous waste.
Note: Some items may not be able to be centralized or containerized due to their size and weight.
e. Completes personal decontamination (buddy team).
10. Decontamination element notifies the operations section that the decontamination site is ready for transfer of responsibilities to the incident commander's representative for waste disposal.
