Arlington Headstone Removal Project
Salamander Protection Protocols
The following instructions are provided to protect Northern Two-lined Salamanders and any other amphibians that may be encountered during the removal of headstones from riparian areas within Arlington National Cemetery and the George Washington Memorial Parkway.
Salamanders and other amphibians are cryptic animals and seek shelter beneath wet stones and woody debris in and along stream corridors. They will likely be encountered during the proposed project. They are non-venomous, and in the fall/winter/spring season, will be very slow-moving and easy to catch and relocate. The Northern Two-lined Salamander is identified by its reddish brown color, two dark lines along its sides from eye to tail and dark spots along the dorsum (top surface).
Northern Two-lined Salamander (Eurycea bislineata)
Guidelines for Handling and Relocation of Amphibians
Work crews are asked to prepare one clean five gallon bucket and new sponge for each work site at the start of each day. Buckets and sponges may be reused at the start of the next shift. Bucket should be labeled as “animal relocation container” “use stream water only” on the outside of the container.
At the start of each shift, buckets should be filled with a clean sponge and one to two inches of clean stream water from the work site. Next, three to four inches of leaf litter should be placed in the bucket.
As submerged or buried headstones and woody material are removed from the stream bed workers are asked to scan the site for amphibians.
If any Northern Two-lined Salamanders or similar amphibian species are seen employees are asked to pick them up with clean gloved hands. Gloves soiled with cement or other construction material should be avoided since they could easily cause chemical burns to amphibian skin.
Amphibians are to be placed in the bucket. They will burrow in the leaf litter and seek the moisture level they need.
At the end of each shift, buckets containing amphibians are to be emptied into a moist area at the mouth of South Branch just outside the LOD.
If any diseased (white spots or deformities) or dead animals are found or if there are any questions or concerns please contact GWMP Biologist Erik Oberg at 202 439-7328 or
Supervisory Natural Resource Manager Brent Steury at 703 289-2541.
