Welcome!
Thank you for your interest in our Wildlife and Power Line Protection products. Since the company’s inception in 1998, our mission has been to assist Utilities in providing consistent and reliable power to their customers while protecting nature. We are proud to now have over 400,000 perching deterrents in service on North and South American power lines.
INSULATING VS. ISOLATING
We believe there are two effective methods that can be utilized in protecting your power lines. The first is to “isolate” the birds and wildlife from the energized portion of your structures and equipment. The second is to “insulate” the power from contact with wildlife and the environment. Therefore, we have categorized our products in this fashion as well.
All of our products are made of UV-resistant Fiberglass, PVC, polypropylene, HDPE, or silicone rubber, with non-corrosive nylon, stainless, or galvanized hardware, and all products have superior dielectric properties.
In addition, we are proud to manufacture all of our products in the USA except for the silicone rubber hose which is more suited to be extruded internationally.
Not finding what you need? We take pride in our ability to develop custom solutions to meet unique problems, so please let us know what you are looking for, and if we don’t have it in development already, we will work with you on a solution that fits your needs. We are here to help you protect your lines from wildlife, and the wildlife from your lines.
We look forward to working with you!

Wildlife Mitigation Products — Insulating vs. Isolating
What does it mean to isolate?
We use the term “isolate” to signify that we are trying to keep the wildlife away from the energized portion of your equipment. If you can do this effectively, you don’t need to worry about insulating the energized lines and equipment in the field.
Why isolate?
Isolating wildlife away from energized portions of your equipment can often be a more cost effective option of mitigating contact with wildlife than insulating every energized line and piece of equipment. An example of this is our Raptor Guard™ perching deterrents (see above). If you can keep birds, especially birds of prey, away from the energized lines and equipment in the first place, there is no danger of service interruption or of bird injuries/death.
Another important reason for isolation is not immediately apparent. The Endangered Species Act was enacted to protect
Endangered Species that are threatened of extinction. Utilities can inadvertently violate this law by providing a man-made
“perch” giving predators an unfair advantage when hunting endangered species. Transmission and Distribution structures provide an non-natural advantage for birds of prey when hunting endangered species on the ground. In areas where protected species exist, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service requires that Utilities mitigate their structures to prevent predators from using these structures as a hunting perch.
Two other important acts affecting wildlife mitigation are the
Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle
Protection Act.

The Migratory Bird Treaty Act is the one of the most far-reaching wildlife protection laws that affect Utilities, covering 863 species of birds. In fact, it is easier to identify the species of birds that are not protected under this law than to list what is protected. The non-protected species are game birds (ducks, geese, etc.), the
Common Starling, the House Sparrow, and the
Rock Pigeon.
This law expressly forbids any party, unless permitted by regulations, to: “pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, attempt to take, capture or kill, possess, offer for sale, sell, offer to purchase, purchase, deliver for shipment, ship, cause to be shipped, deliver for transportation transport, cause to be transported, carry, or cause to be carried by any means whatever, receive for shipment, transportation or carriage, or export, at any time, or in any manner, any migratory bird in the terms of this Convention...for the protection of migratory birds...or any part, nest, or egg of any such bird.” (16 U.S.C. 703).
Insulating vs. Isolating
When it is not possible to isolate wildlife from the energized equipment, we turn to insulating devices to cover the exposed areas. Remember, the objective is to provide a barrier that will to keep Wildlife from touching either two energized phases or an energized phase and a ground source.

TRANSMISSION VERTICAL
CONSTRUCTION DETERRENTS
Wildlife Mitigation Products — Deterrents
Horizontal Post Insulators can provide a source for birds to perch in areas where prey can be found close by. The distance between the high voltage conductor and a potential ground source (steel or wood poles, bonded hardware, or a ground wire) is often times less than 50” apart. Our RG-VT series of deterrents are designed to prevent birds from causing outages due to phase to ground contact. Due to the intensity of the electrical field at these higher voltages, it is also uncomfortable for the bird to perch close to phase for an extended amount of time thereby minimizing their hunting opportunities.

RAPTOR GUARD™ WILDLIFE PERCHING EXCLUDER
SOLUTIONS FOR PROTECTED SPECIES HABITAT
These products are designed specifically for excluding perching events on structures that are located in areas where protected species are known to populate, or have breeding grounds. In these cases extra measures must be taken to prevent raptors from using power line structures as hunting platforms. Power Line Sentry has developed a set of products that extend our deterrent’s capabilities to not only protect birds from being electrocuted but also discourage th ese same predators from using the structure entirely.

This products is designed specifically for excluding perching events on structures. This solves two major problems that can occur on transmission structures. The first relates to the contamination of hanging insulator strings. When birds perch above these insulator strings, they often defecate or “stream” on to the insulators below them. Over time, this material will build up and cause flashovers, damaged equipment, and outages. The second reason relates to areas where protected species are known to populate, or have breeding grounds. In these cases extra measures must be taken to prevent raptors from using power line structures as hunting platforms.

SMART-TIE AND SMART-BAND
POLYMER BANDING SOLUTIONS
How many times would a long lasting zip tie come in handy to band items together on a structure or cable drop? Now there is a better solution that using electrical tape, standard zip-ties or even steel banding. Smart-Ties provide a high strength, non-conductive, and long-lasting banding solution that can replace these traditional methods. The high strength of the Smart-Band is made possible by integrating fiberglass threads throughout the length of the UV resistant polymer material. Also, since the band is made of a polymer material, there is no risk of dissimilar metal caused corrosion failures.

CONSTRUCTING YOUR OWN
OSPREY NEST DIVERTING SOLUTION
Problem:
One of the keys to successful mitigation of an Osprey targeted site is early detection.
Once the mating pair has established their nest and eggs, it is not permitted to disturb them until the young have left. The nest pictured to the right was in the process of being built and therefore located in time to mitigate.
STEP 1: Remove Existing Nest and Heavily Mitigate
After removing the nest from the pole, install Raptor Guard Nest Excluders completely across the exposed cross-arms.
STEP 2. Construct an Alternative Nesting Site
Ron Spencer of White River Electric in Meeker, CO builds alternate nests by cutting an old cross-arm in half, adding D.A. bolts to attach it to the top of a pole, using 28” braces for support, and then placing a 3’ x 3’ platform on top. He finds that small pallets can fit very well.
Gather some twigs that are similar to the size used by the Osprey and arrange them around the outside perimeter of the platform to simulate a nest. Ron believes this will lower the risk of rejecting the new nesting platform. Ron ties these bundles down with a small amount of tie wire to hold the bundles in place.
The second trick is to place the alternate nest platform in the near vicinity and a little higher than power line they used in their previous nest site. The slightly higher elevation provides the Osprey a perceived advantage over their previous site.
STEP 3: Continue to Monitor the Site until Osprey Chooses an
Alternative nest site.
Even with heavy mitigation, building a new nesting pole, and transferring the nesting material to the alternate nest, Osprey will often try to re-build immediately after the mitigation is complete. However we have found success by removing the twigs each day or every couple of days and putting the twigs in the alternate nest.
Plan on returning to this nest site next year to make sure the returning Osprey have chosen the nest platform and have not decided to build on the pole again.

FIBERGLASS ARTIFICIAL NESTING PLATFORM
Wildlife Mitigation Products — Nesting and Nest Deterrents
TM
Looking for an quick way to divert a nesting pair of ravens or raptors? This long lasting fiberglass nesting platform may be a good solution. For a long term solution, we recommend placing the platform on an adjacent pole dedicated to the nest platform but if you don’t have time during nesting season to get the proper right of way documentation in place then mounting this platform to the pole or pole top may be a good short term alternative. Once the nest has been vacated, you can move the platform to a more suitable location.
