PART 1 GENERAL

The work covered by this section consists of furnishing all equipment, labor, materials, and incidentals, and performing all operations necessary for the clearing, grubbing, and stripping of the areas specified herein or indicated on the drawings, and for the removal and disposal of cleared, grubbed, and stripped materials, and refilling of holes resulting from grubbing.

1.1 DEFINITIONS

1.2.1 Clearing

Clearing consists of the removal and satisfactory disposal of all above ground and below ground trees, downed timber, snags, slash, brush, garbage, trash, debris, fencing, and other items occurring in the designated areas to be cleared.

1.2.2 Grubbing

Grubbing consists of the removal and satisfactory disposal of stumps, roots larger than 1-1/2 inches in diameter, and matted roots from the designated grubbing areas. Grubbing also includes filling of holes from the grubbing operation.

1.2.3 Stripping

Stripping consists of the removal and satisfactory disposal of crops, weeds, grass, and other vegetative materials to the ground surface and topsoil to a depth of 6-12 inches.

1.2 QUALITY CONTROL

The contractor shall not drive thru or disturb existing vegetation to remain. Cut and/or mulch to dispose at landfill. Do not dispose of vegetation on any arroyo, desert or any place on WSMR, except landfill.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

Tree wound paint may be required for damaged trees during construction activities. Submit samples in cans with manufacturer's label of bituminous based paint of standard manufacture specially formulated for tree wounds. Herbicides not allowed.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION

3.1.1 Protection

A. Roads and channels: Keep roads and channels free of dirt and debris at all times.

B. Trees, shrubs, and existing infrastructures: Protect trees and vegetation to be left standing from damage incident to clearing, grubbing, and construction operations by the erection of barriers or by such other means as the circumstances require.

C. Utility Lines: Protect all existing utility lines. Notify the COR immediately of damage to or an encounter with an unknown existing utility line. The contractor is responsible for the repair of damage to existing utility lines that are indicated or made known to the contractor prior to start of clearing and grubbing operations. When utility lines which are to be removed are encountered within the area of operations, notify the COR in ample time to minimize interruption of the service.

3.1.2 Clean Up, Disposal, And Protection

Clean the site of all material associated with the clearing and grubbing operations. Remove from the project site and its surroundings and dispose of excess and waste material off Government property.

3.2 CLEARING

Clearing shall be accomplished within the limits of construction. Trees, snags, brush, garbage, trash, debris and other items shall be cleared flush with the existing ground surface. Trees and vegetation designated to be left standing or to remain shall be protected from damage from construction operations.

Clearing of borrow areas shall be limited to the minimum area required for construction operations.

Clearing shall consist of the felling, trimming, and cutting of trees into sections and the satisfactory disposal of the trees and other vegetation designated for removal, including downed timber, snags, brush, and rubbish occurring within the areas to be cleared. Trees, stumps, roots, brush, and other vegetation in areas to be cleared shall be cut off flush with or below the original ground surface, except such trees and vegetation as may be indicated or directed to be left standing. Trees designated to be left standing within the cleared areas shall be trimmed of dead branches 1-1/2 inches or more in diameter and shall be trimmed of all branches the heights indicated or directed. Limbs and branches to be trimmed shall be neatly cut close to the bole of the tree or main branches. Cuts more than 1-1/2 inches in diameter shall be painted with an approved tree-wound paint.

3.3 GRUBBING

Grubbing shall be accomplished within the limits of construction. Grubbing shall be accomplished to a depth of at least 3 feet below the existing ground surface. Fill depressions and holes made by grubbing operations with suitable material. This material shall be placed in 6” inch layers to the elevation of the adjacent ground surface and each layer compacted to a density at least equal to that of the adjoining undisturbed material, or as specified otherwise.

3.4 DISPOSAL OF MATERIALS

All materials resulting from clearing and grubbing operations shall be disposed of by removal from the site. In no case shall any material resulting from clearing and grubbing operations be buried or placed within the channel, arroyos, desert, borrow sites or main cantonment. Vegetation from the clearing and grubbing operations may be disposed of in the WSMR landfill when cut and unified. Use WSMR Construction & Demolition Debris (C&D) Landfill Turn-in Inspection Sheet to dispose of material in WSMR landfill.

Burning is not allowed.
