About this file

This document is an interface standard, MIL-STD-1408D, that provides specifications and requirements for the improved family of military air conditioners ranging from 9,000 to 36,000 BTU/hr cooling capacity. It includes detailed tables and figures specifying the technical characteristics, performance, and physical dimensions for both horizontal and vertical compact air conditioners. The standard covers operating temperature ranges, refrigerant type, electrical requirements, airflow, weight, and other interface details. This standard would be used to select appropriate air conditioning units to meet defined needs in military applications. It does not contain information about a specific federal contract opportunity.

STD 16 - Method of Testing for Rating Room Air Conditioners and Packaged Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners.

STD 37 - Method of Testing for Rating Unitary Air Conditioning and Heating Heating Pump Equipment.

(Application for copies should be addressed to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, 1791 Tullie Circle, NE, Atlanta, GA 30329.)

3. DEFINITIONS

3.1 Definitions and abbreviations. The definitions and abbreviations used in this standard are as follows:

AC - Alternating current

A/C - Air conditioner - A device with the primary function of cooling air. This cooled air is then used to cool equipment and personnel within an enclosure. An A/C may or may not include supplemental heating capability. Usually provides secondary effect of dehumidifying and filtering the air being circulated within the space (see the figures specified in 5.1.4).

Btu - British thermal units - The quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit at, or near, its point of maximum density (39.1 F).

Btu/hr - British thermal units per hour.

Dry bulb - Dry bulb temperature is that measured by an ordinary temperature thermometer. It indicates only sensible heat changes.

F - Fahrenheit

Hz - Hertz (a unit of frequency, expressed in cycles per second).

lbs - Weight, pounds.

kW - Kilowatt (1,000 watts).

psi - Pressure, pound per square inch.

scfm - Standard cubic feet per minute - Cubic feet of air flow per minute at 14.69 psi and 58.73 F conditions.

TBD - To be determined wg - Water gage - Pressure, in inches of water. On the data sheets, this is used to express the external static pressure on the A/C evaporator when describing conditions at which A/C conditioned air flow was measured.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION

4.1 Capacity. All air conditioners shall be capacity tested in accordance with American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standard 16 or 37, as applicable.

4.2 Design. All air conditioners covered by this standard have been designed for installation inside or outside of vans, stationary and mobile shelters, and similar enclosures, provided unrestricted outdoor ambient air is available to the unit for proper operation. Unless otherwise noted, one place decimals shall be .5, 2 place decimals shall be .25, 3 place decimals shall be .015. The input and alternate power input connectors shall be wired in accordance with the following:

Pin A shall be Phase A or line 1 Pin B shall be Phase B, or line 2, if applicable Pin C shall be Phase C, or line 3, if applicable Pin D shall be neutral, or N Pin E shall be ground.

4.3 Reduction in airflow. A reduction in the unit’s rated airflow and cooling performance can be expected should the static pressure, as specified on item 14 of the tables, be exceeded by the installation of external ducts, filters, registers, or other devices which restrict the flow of air to and from the A/C.

5. DETAIL REQUIREMENTS

5.1 The family of military air conditioners. The family consists of units ranging from 9,000 Btu/hr cooling to 36,000 Btu/hr cooling. These units are arranged into two categories: horizontal compact and vertical compact. All units cool, dehumidify and heat. The heating capacity is designed so that the power demand in the heating mode approximates that of the cooling mode.

5.1.1 Compact air conditioners. The compact air conditioners are intended to satisfy the majority of requirements of the Field Army. They are designed for minimum size and weight, standardization of components, minimum power requirement, a tolerance of variations in power supply, and maximum reliability and maintainability consistent with their relatively small interior volume. Their features include:

a. Rugged construction and able to withstand high levels of shock and vibration.

b. Automatically controlled heating as well as cooling.

c. Compatibility with collective protection systems.

d. Fresh air ventilation with or without cooling or heating.

e. Self-protection against abnormal temperatures.

f. Self-protection against cutoff of condenser airflow.

g. Compatibility with sensitive electronic systems.

5.1.2 Horizontal compact air conditioners. The horizontal units are designed with their maximum dimension in the horizontal direction.

5.1.3 Vertical compact air conditioners. The vertical air conditioners have their maximum dimension in the vertical direction for applications where available space and the specific cooling requirement dictate a relatively narrow, tall unit.

5.1.4 Tables and Figures. Tables 1 through 6 depict some requirements of the air conditioners; other requirements are shown in applicable Purchase Description.

Figures 1 through 6 depict pictorial representation of required features and necessary dimensional requirements.

5.1.4.1 Condenser Air Intake and Discharge. For all horizontal units, condenser air intake and discharge openings shall be located on the rear of the air conditioners (as shown in the applicable figures). If desired, these openings may be located on the rear of the air conditioners and both right and left sides of the air conditioners. The side openings shall not extend beyond the rear half of the air conditioners.

5.2 Method of reference. Reference to models should include the capacity, horizontal or vertical, and electrical characteristics of the desired air conditioner; information may be found on the tables and figures provided herein.
